I bought it in '04, it's a 30" widescreen 1080i tube TV (not LCD or plasma). When I turn it on, the pic comes up just fine, but a few seconds later the picture begins to pull toward the middle of the screen and disappears, then the TV shuts itself off. Weird. I thought about just chunking it, but I hate to! If anyone has had this same problem, please let me know. This TV was my first HD so it's kinda my baby. (I do have a new 120hz TV, but I hate to chunk my baby!) Any thoughts?

I had one that did the same thing. Finally I had it looked at. My advice... take it to the top floor of your house, drink lots of vodka, play loud music, chuck it out the window. About as close to Pete Townsend as you can get.

If the TV is a DLP, then your problem is the bulb. I had the same problem with mine. Pretty easy to DIY, cost about $150.

I chunked the Samsung out the window (didn't paint a "5" on it first, though!) Not worth the hassle of trying to get it repaired. I now need to get a new TV for the bedroom (had bought the new flatscreen for the LR and transferred the old TV from the LR to the bedroom and then it crapped out on me. oh well, now I get to buy a new TV!)

My 36" Sony CRT may be next.........................the picture is great but the brains are starting to choke. It keeps going to default settings and "auto-programming" mode for no reason.

Sounds like the vertical output circuit is toast. In the old tube days, you merely changed out the vertical output tube. With modern day TVs, it's cheaper to go buy a new one. CRT TVs are becoming dinosaurs.

A real rock star would have shot the screen. :D

My old 27" Sony CRT went dumpster bound about a month ago, I want to get a SONY 46" or 52" flat screen but I'm currently content not having a TV for now.

I wish. Unfortunately I couldn't lift the damn thing by myself. Funny, it didn't look like it weighed that much, being a slim-fit and all (15" depth) but it was a heavy mother.... Truthfully, I gave it to a friend. If he can fix it, he can have it. Gotta get a new TV for my bedroom, but just spent a small chunk of change on the 46". Oh well, no big deal. I can think of worse situations!

My friend hasn't been able to fix the old Samsung. I knew he couldn't fix it, and he knew it too. Oh well. I now have two Sony Bravias: 46" in the Living Room and 40" in the bedroom. Pretty sweet.

I had a Proton 31" that had the same skewing problem. I took it in to Proton and they fixed it for about $150. It happened 2 more times so I ended up tossing it. I did have it for around 10 years so not that bad.

I had a 25" Samsung in the bedroom that I bought around '93 and it lasted about 10 or 11 years. It died suddenly also. I turned it on one day and there was no picture, the tube just remained dark. I figured that I got my money's worth out of it, though.
