I just removed my fuel sending unit from the tank of my 84 Mondial QV. it has always read 1/4 of a tank. ( like many of you I have noticed) since I have owned it for the past six years. after removing and testing the float, it appears that over time the float absorbs a small amount of gasoline which holds it at the 1/4 tank level. after drying out my float and testing, it now reads correctly through all the gauge level indicators 1/2 / 3/4/ full and reserve, etc.. My question is, is there a replacement float, or can it be coated with some type of fuel resistant coating? if I just put this part back in it would become saturated again. are replacement parts for the in tank sending unit still available?

    Thanks!

No need to remove the tank (s) on a 84 Mondial QV Cab, just drain the gas and remove the sending unit from the underside / passenger side of the vehicle. I made a special tool to remove the sending unit, however a good pair of needle nose pliers will probably work just as well. My unit was only a little more then finger tight , so removing it was not an issue. Unit drops straight down, and out once you remove the electrical leads. I have a specialist in repairing in tank sending units looking over my original unit and will come up with a repair / Fix, and or replacement. Good Luck.

I had to swap the fuel sender on my QV coupe as the internal metal slider thingy had rotted away. I couldn't get hold of a the Ferrari part 116045 so ended up with the Superperformance version. It's not very good though, as you get the mechanism etc, but the float arm arrives as a 50cm straight bar, a little thicker than coat hanger wire.
You then have to cut and bend it into exactly the same shape as the original one. 1st attempt and it fouled on something in the tank, numerous measuring, comparing and swearing attempts later and its accurate, but still gets stuck on something just below 50% - so I've left it and head to a garage to fill up when I hit around 220 miles!!! Next big overhaul and I think I'll source the proper part.

On the Coupe, it's a pig to get at as it's mounted on the side of the tank. I managed to do it with the tanks in situ, but it's really tight and fiddly. I bought an adjustable face pin wrench from Amazon for £10 to get the retainer ring off. Not ideal, but it did the job.

I've seen generic fuel sender floats on eBay for £8 - they look very similar and I'm sure with a bit of wire bending they could made to fit easily.
