Great drive! Terrific weather! Always a pleasure to meet new fellow enthusiasts and to catch up with old friends! Thanks for putting the route together, Ron, and for getting everyone together, Robert! The Landsdowne venue was a good meeting place. Maybe we can make it the new NoVA rally point? Here are a few pics from my co-pilot's POV. Take care! --AP Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks for the pics everyone... Estoril Blue, I am assuming that you are the M3 that came by a little before we left... I LOVE your car. Well done. VAViper, still waiting on those videos
Hey guys, Unfortunately I only managed to grab a few minutes of footage during the drive before my cameras quit on me. It was my first time using my current setup, but Im assuming that since Both JVC camcorders are hard drive based, the G-Force sensors kicked in due to vibration and locked up the drives/powered off the camera to avoid a head crash on the disk. After playing with the cameras for a while, I discovered that this feature can be disabled, but Im assuming that this option could only wind up being expensive in the end. If anyone has any thoughts or answers to this problem, Im all ears! Otherwise Im thinking I may have to start looking at Tape/DV (which would suck incredibly) or solid state solutions, Rob
Rob: I think your intuition is good on this one. IIRC you had your camera(s) mounted on an external bracket. I've seen home-made steadicam solutions - but never subjected to the forces it would see on a spirited drive. If you need suggestions for a replacement camera that doesn't use a HD - I can contribute 1-2 good ones (although I suspect you are focused on preserving your existing investment). Regards, Alan
Just fooling around with one of my photos. If someone wants it in full resolution - let me know. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hey fellas, can I get an electronic copy of the route emailed? It was a great drive, 'cept for the ending for a few of us.. thanks to VA's finest. [email protected] Cheers, Ken Lally
The nice thing about Google Maps is that you can add new destinations to a map with directions in it. Google Maps adds the destinations to the web address, so all you have to do is save the browser's web address to save the route. Click on the following web address and it will display the route we took that day: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=1103278723152038664,39.101310,-77.538690%3B12674665126734200558,39.102640,-77.574100%3B790721768721667884,39.032990,-77.624250%3B9848139027407644497,39.024734,-77.711621%3B7893892652084928222,39.066680,-77.750350%3B14751830770433633403,38.974260,-77.797770%3B3548089120051319731,39.013714,-77.962247%3B8917013972052979261,39.115223,-77.845939%3B4776825427057140671,39.109840,-77.554010&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=Belmont+Ridge+Rd,+Leesburg,+VA+20176&daddr=E+Market+St%2FVA-7+W+%4039.101310,+-77.538690+to:Leesburg+Bypass%2FUS-15-BYP+S%2FVA-7+W+%4039.102640,+-77.574100+to:James+Monroe+Hwy%2FUS-15+%4039.032990,+-77.624250+to:Snickersville+Turnpike+%4039.024734,+-77.711621+to:Snickersville+Turnpike+%4039.066680,+-77.750350+to:St+Louis+Rd+%4038.974260,+-77.797770+to:John+S+Mosby+Hwy%2FUS-17+N%2FUS-50+W+%4039.013714,+-77.962247+to:Blueridge+Mountain+Rd+%4039.115223,+-77.845939+to:510-I+East+Market+Street,+Leesburg,+VA+20176&mra=pe&mrcr=8&sll=39.108751,-77.595062&sspn=0.131602,0.2314&ie=UTF8&ll=39.108751,-77.595062&spn=0.065801,0.1157&z=13&om=1 It is a fairly lengthy web address but fortunately this forum abbreviates it when it is displayed in a post. You can zoom in or out and print out different sections of the route if you'd like. Maybe we should start collecting a set of Google Maps for the different rides we go on? As far as dealing with Virginia's Finest, I'm not sure there is any remedy to that. Route 7 is the most patrolled road near my home, so I try to keep my speed under 60 most of the time on that road. (Our Maryland friends will say the fix is to only do these drives in MD, not VA.)
Toggie- got it! Thanks!! I dont think I'll do another cruise w/out a radar-detector, the Beltronics, STI is the only one that wont leak and is undetectible by VA radar-detector detectors. As a result of the pull over on Sat, I've got it on order Ken Lally
I've been tossing around the idea of grabbing an STI Driver myself for a while now. I've been seeing great reviews on that bad boy! What I've been wondering is if there's any truth to the rumors that the cops can confiscate your detector if your caught. If it's just a (Non Moving Violation) fine, then that's one thing, but I remember even hearing (though I'm not sure how much truth there was involved) that a cop grabbed someones detector in VA and smashed it into the ground during a stop. At $450 a pop, that would suck incredibly! Anyone know if there's any truth to these rumors? If this is the case, then I'm sure we'd be going through these units like candy with instant on and laser becoming more prevailent in VA these days. I've also thought that even if one could remove the unit from the windshield during a stop, the last thing a cop would want to see during that stop is someone fumbling to hide something in the car as he approched the vehicle.. Anyone in here have any thoughts?

Very nice! I was always partial to the LeMans Blue and the Imola Red, but Estoril looks great with your setup! Congrats! Robert
Yes, don't put the detector in an obvious location such as on the visor, or the dash, a cord that hangs down from your visor, NEVER use coil cords because they are balky, and suction cups because you can see them sticking to the windshield from a distance away when a LEO is approaching your vehicle driving in the opposite direction. Get creative, mount it on top of your visor with only the front sticking out, or behind your seat some how with a clear shot of the road. Next time I see you I can look at your car with you and spend some time sitting in it and getting creative. I wouldn't recommend fumbling around with anything if a LEO is already behind you with his lights on. But, if your paying attention, to the road and your surroundings, you will have plenty of time to put something away as the LEO plays catch up. If nothing else a Radar detector and Laser Jammer will let you know if you have been busted and afford you this time. I just thought of a spot, why not stick it to your video camera or on the mount? And one more thing VA sucks for drivers.
