    Hey guys,
My roomie and best friend has organized a FREE show this Saturday from 10 am till 2 pm. It's on the Veterans Administration Medical Center grounds in North Chicago and should be a nice afternoon. Mostly what she was trying to do with this show was get some interesting cars to show up to lift the spirits of the patients. Haley (my roomie) works for the VA and also takes our dogs in to work with the patients. Many of the patients will never leave the hospital and with the Iraq situation there has been an influx of young kids in long term care there too. The patients see her drive our cars there all the time and talk to her about what they had or want so she sold the VA on trying this. If it goes well it will be an annual event.
Like I said it's free for anyone with a special interest car. The cars will be parked in a group of lots behind the main building on pavement. As an added bonus the VA has agreed to supply free snacks and drinks. The "show" is non judged, but the VA director will be giving some award to the car they like the most and there will be something similar awarded to the favorite car of the patients.
As this is a first for the VA, we just don't know how big the crowd will be, but we've been assured there is plenty of room and if they run out of drinks they will have some of the kids from the navy base "core school" on hand to help.
As it's scheduled to run only until 2pm I thought maybe we could use this as a "staging point" as well to go to Freddie’s after? As a thank you for showing up the first round of drinks (for people from ferrarichat or our old group of regulars) at Freddie’s is on me :)
Haley Kim and I will be bringing the gto's and the Lambo and the list of other cars Haley and I have had give us tentative confirmation is pretty incredible. This will be a very diverse group, please please come out Saturday - you might make new friends. We have street rods, restored vintage cars, at least one Cobra, a few replica's, some musclecars, corvettes, a beautiful 50's Mercedes roadster (same guy who offered to bring that has a 512BBi). The only newer cars we invited were specialty cars like a couple Vipers, Ferrari's and Lambo's. It is to be a tuner free zone :)
Even if you're not up for Freddie’s afterward this would be a nice drive to the north burbs, for a good cause, and would make a nice shakedown run for the Shoreline drive Sunday..
please let me know if you are interested, I was thinking maybe I would set aside one area of the lot for the Ferrari's

    Chelle,

Pending personal issues and weather, I will try to be there. I have a lot of respect for those who served and it sounds like it might be a fun outing. Small problem I have is that my father has been sick recently and how he is doing will be the greatest factor in where I am at the moment. Plus my one and single buddy Skip, as you may know is under a bit of a health scare so I feel more comfortable with a wingman. Any word on how he is doing?
Please post the address. This sounds like a wonderful cause.

    RocketBoy

PS: I will either bring my H2 or see if my Dad and his Ferrari can make it.

Thanx! I look forward to seeing you there!
I need to call Skip.. thanx for reminding me - I been really distracted lately :(
I'll post tonight directions for anyone that might need, and FYI - when entering the VA campus, when right in front of the main building on the northwest corner of the property there is a sign warning of a speed bump, take that opportunity to go to the left or right and use the parallel roads through the lots, that is the only speed bump on the property and it's best to go around it, well, unless you're in the Hummer :)

Yes,Chelle. Please post directions if you can. If I can make it,I certainly will.

I used to deliver supplies to the VA Hopsitals all around the area, back in the 1980's-VA Great Lakes, VA Hines,in Maywood. VA Westside on Ogden Av.,in the City, and another one, which I think may have closed, called "Lakeside",which was downtown-ish,by the Lake. But,it's been so long ago,I really don't remember how to get there.

And,much agreed. These poor guys gave ALOT for our country, and are suffering for it for the rest of thier lives. They really could use some "Cheering Up". I will do what I can to try to go,but, may have to bail at 2:00PM if I can make it.

    Hiya Frank :)
    I'd love to see ya.
Haley has told me lots of stories from her doing pet therapy with the patients there. I went with her a few times (we spent about 8 hours there on Christmas day).

How to get to the VA campus:
    From Chicago:
Take 94 north to exit Rt. 137(Buckley Road) east
East on Rt. 137 to North Chicago VA Medical Center, next stop light
after Green Bay Road (Lewis & Rt. 137)

    From Wisconsin:
Take 94 south, exit Hwy. 41 (Waukegan)
Continue south and exit Rt. 137 (Buckley Road) east
East on Rt. 137 to North Chicago VA Medical Center, next stop light
after Green Bay Road (Lewis & Rt. 137)

Once you arrive at the main entrance you turn right, go in till the road comes to a "T" turn right again and go until you see the speed bump sign. Turn right and immediately left (so you can avoid the speed bump by going through the adjacent lot) Keep following the lot around past the emergency room entrance until you see the tents and our little blue Lambo (and hopefully quite a few more cars)
If anyone has any questions please ask!
    Hope to see ya there!
    Thanx,
    Chelle & Haley

Of course, I'll need help paying for gas! ;)

Honestly Skip I don't know if there are any "Rollers" coming... there are going to be quite a few vintage large sedans... not sure if any were Rolls... Whatever you bring is great. It would be nice to see any of your cars, I know you have other cars.... someday I hope to see more of them, but with your health stuff of late I'll come get you if you aren't up for driving...
Honestly I miss two summers ago - when we all got together more often... the cars are great but the people is what made the drives work :)
We begged a couple Dino owners to bring cars, but no one confirmed, at least the weather is supposed to be excellent.. high of like 82 and partly cloudy :) for both saturday and sunday

Haley said her offer is still good too - she'll make homemade spaghetti if ya want real food.
    :)
And Bill, if you're reading this, I'll bring that darn magazine for you I was talking about

new treat added - Volo made another donation and Haley decided to make it into a door prize for three car owners/drivers. She's going to have a drawing and one of the directors will draw three car numbers from a bowl. Those three will get a free one year family pass to Volo Auto museum :)

It's very nice of you to do this, wish that I were up there to support the show.

At the entrance to the VA Hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio there is a sign which reads "The price of freedom is visible here". Always chokes me up when I see it.

Man,you said it. There was a sign at a Travelling Vietnam Vets Wall that I attended a couple months back, that says "All gave some. Some gave ALL". No doubt. These guys should be treated like how our society treats CEO'S. Rock Stars. Entertainers. Pro Athletes. Movie Stars. Public Servants. Etc..... But,they aren't. Really makes you think about our societies priorities, doesn't it. Sad. Very Sad.

Chelle,if it's not pouring Rain,I will be there.

I'm going to try and make it.

Figured I'd bring the Roller, so I'll have to go get it from storage. Probably won't be there by 10.

    I am Haley, Michelle's roomie,

Thank you all for the words of support and many thanks to those who can make it to the show. Being a former Marine, working at the VA and also taking my dogs in to the hospital and doing Pet Therapy with the guys and gals, I see first hand what some of them are going through these days. It truly warms my heart to know that there are people who think of what these heroes have sacraficed. This had started as a dream to have the show, and just may be the highlight of the Year for these Veterans. I just want to have the Vets smile, that is my only desire. We should have a great turnout, with a few highlights being a 1921 Stutz Fire Engine, Model A's and T's, a 300SL Mercedes, a Cobra, GTO's, T-birds... and many others. Just an incredible array of Automotive history, we will get lots of pics and a list of cars that come. Thanks again to ALL, and of course... SEMPER FIDELIS!

Hey,what a nice show. I am really glad that I was able to attend. I was talking to alot of the guys there, and they seemed like they really enjoyed the cars. I'm really happy that I was able to put a smile or two on some of their faces...(I told them I was the Fat,out of shape Magnum P.I. 20 years later. They got a chuckle out of that one...:) )

The show was terrific, I know a lot of hard work went into putting it together.

    Congrats Haley.

Too bad more of our 'brethren' (you know who you are), weren't there to help support such a good cause.

It was great to see the eyes light up on those Vets, many who are spending the rest of their lives in the hospital.

Chelle, what did you find out about the car; is it running now?

P.S.The time has been changed to meet at the MSI by 10am tomorrow.

I think more of the vets liked the Grey Poupon in Skip's Roller than they had admiration for the two cars that won. It was a neat afternoon, and I agree was great to see people who have sacrificied so much be moved by something as small as an unusual car in their backyard. Good to see Frank again: I think his stories and friendly manner could break up the tension at a IDF and PLO meeting. Also good to meet Chuck, his Maser looks like it will be flying very soon the way he smiles when talking about it.

PS: A few vets told me they would have liked to compare my H2 to their "real" Hummers.
