There are quite a few threads running on the board at the moment about people not driving their F-cars for fear of depreciation/breakdown/envy/ damage/ etc etc Which just led me to wonder - what are you saving / preserving your money FOR? To buy a nice car maybe...

For me it's my art collection on wheels. I don't have to use as an everyday driver. Rainless miles and not tracked. I tend to get high trade in values and often sell without a visual inspection. To it up, I guess I'm saving it for the next owner.

They're saving for the premature engine rebuild they will need because they didn't drive it much.

I've decided against a repaint and new interior for my 330 2+2. I would go insane every time a stone chip hit it or I dribbled some coffee or soda on the leather or carpets. It looks more than presentably good now, and I prefer to spend maintenance $$ to keep it in top mechanical condition. I don't intentionally drive it in any kind of precipitation, though. Maybe I'll restore it in 10 years. One thing I know -- it's NOT depreciating in value.

This thread goes into the category of: "To each his own, the old lady said as she kissed the cow." I'm not a concours person or a show car person or a "collector" of things just to say I have them. I own cars to drive them. I have two Jaguar XKE's, and they get driven, alot. I have the Ferrari to drive, to autocross and to take on the track. And I have an everyday driver SUV, well, just because.

IMHO, cars were made to drive, not look at. They are fun to look at, but I'd rather drive them. But that's me. I know many folks who love nothing more than to spend hour upon hour polishing their wheels and making sure that every fiber in their carpet is absolutely perfectly straight. That's what they enjoy. It makes them happy. Good for them.

I make no value judgment one way or the other. It's simply a matter of taste or preference. I remember an old admonition from when I was in college back in the hippy days:

"I was not put on this earth to meet your expectations.
You were not put here to meet mine.
You do your thing, I do mine.
And if by chance we find each other, that's fine."

I've always kept that in mind, and as a result, I don't care what other people think about what I do, and frankly, I don't get upset about what others do as long as it does not hurt me. So, drive your car. Or not. Matters not to me. But me, I'm driving them.

Good Call. I'm with you on this one.
I never could understand why some poeple get so worked up about what other people do with thier own things. If its not yours, then what the owner does with it, is none of your concern.

Also, maybe they are saving the car for that mystical, magical day when the moon is full, the circle of candles are lit in the clockwise fashion... you know...

I agree entirely and I'm not judging - the question was, seriously, "What are they saving it FOR?" I just don't get it - it just doesn't get any better than being an F-driver, IMHO. Are they saving for a newer / bigger / faster one? In which case, when will they be happy?

Personally I drive my Ferrari every time the weather looks good. But some people might feel like having dessert every day is not right. They like the anticipation to build so the ride is more special. I agree that it will likely cause more mechanical work to let them sit, but those that drive once or twice a year might feel like they have a new car every time they drive.

BTW: its not just the Ferrari. Bodywork on my widebody RX-7 would be a nightmare to repair. And my 240Z has no bumper on the rear & fiberglass aesthetics on the front. Well, if the JR supercharged Miata was totaled I’d loose 8K in mods. Basically, I'm screwed.
JUST ONE PARANOID DRIVER anyway you put it.

The greatest value in owning a Ferrari is driving it, otherwise you are missing the whole point

I don't get it either. Keeping a car in the garage and not driving it is not in my vocabulary. But, obviously, some people must have their own reasons. They may not be reasons that you or I would buy into. That's their issue, not mine or yours. Cars were meant to drive, IMHO. So I drive the ones I own, and I encourage others I know to do the same. Whether they do or not is their decision.

As to what they are saving it "for", their reasons may vary from believing that it will go up in value, will be the ultimate collectible, wanting to keep it pristine for high-end concours, afraid to drive it for fear of damage, etc. I'm sure someone who does it could tell you. But none of those reasons are MY reasons. My reason for owning them is to enjoy driving them. Others may enjoy just having them, looking at them, caring for them.

For me, driving them is the main if not the only reason, period. That said, anyone who can afford to buy one has the right to enjoy it in any way they choose, whether we see the logic in it or not.

Don't worry about Ferrari depreciation, your body and life are depreciating every day with the risk of being totaled any minute of any day. Drive it or your heirs will.
