Earlier I had asked about saving streaming video off of Google, and people were very helpful in pointing me to programs that could take those indecipherable Google files and actually play them back once you saved them from your Temporary Internet Files folder - thank you!

NOW I'm asking if there is a way to record / playback certain files that stream, but do not seem to reside in the Temporary File folder. Can software be written to do that, or did I just not look close enough? If the former, so that streaming video DOESN'T appear in your Temp directory, is there still a way to record them?

    Thanks in advance!

I haven't done this personally (tried to record streaming video) but here's some software that purports to do it:

One of the issues with recording streaming media seems to be that the actual URL of the media is generally hidden from view. That is to say, that the file you link to (.wmx file, many times, for windows media for example) is many times a 'proxy' file that controls the stream -- that's how they are able to (allegedly) stream the highest quality stream available to you at the bandwidth you're connected to the internet. It also has the added benefit to the media owners to help keep their content from being pirated.

Don't go filling your whole computer up with porn now.... ;)
