We don't get amphibious planes landing at our local airport in Northern Virginia, so it was quite a site to see one today.
This looks like a relative new Cessna StationAir TC.
Beautiful plane. It definitely sits up high when parked on the ramp.

Plus it had an unusual "N" number on the side of it. Actually a "C" number. Is that a Canadian registration number?

Ah, nice! So, how is life in the ADIZ? You're correct, btw, the C is a Canadian registration prefix.

ADIZ is a bit of a pain. My 16-year-old son is the main reason we go to JYO - for his flying lessons every weekend.

If I ever buy a plane (my plan/dream one day), I'll probably keep it 35 minutes to the west at Winchester Airport (OKV).
It would be worth the driving time, to avoid both the ADIZ and the higher level of business jet traffic.

Here is another pic of that amphibious Cessna I took.

Well, I'm sure flying somewhere else will seem so easy to your son once he's finished! He'll become good on the radios very quickly.

I've heard Winchester is a nice little airport. I had to plan my X country for my checkride up there. Of course we didn't complete it, but I want to pop up there eventually.

That 206 would make one heck of a surf expedition vehicle...I want one now. :)

Yes, been to Winchester Airport many times during my training. It is our closest "cross country" destination. Great for practicing "a whole round trip" in a two-hour lesson time window or less. That, and Frederick, MD are the nearest airports to Leesburg.

I'm still working on my private pilot license. I haven't flown in about 4 years. Made three runs at it over the past 15 years, each time got about 90% of the way there, passed the written, done a solo x-country, and then got too busy at work to get it done. So now I have a few things to straighten out health-wise for my class 3 medical, then I'll be back at it again in a 172.

I helped a friend to fly the freight with a 206 in the early 70's in the San juan Islands and I think the 206 is one of the best that Cessna ever did, great airplane and just the right combination of size and power. other good Cessnas were the 195 and the fix-geared Cardinal...lovely flying machines.

How tough is it to land an amphibious plane on a runway?
Do you have to keep the plane's attitude closer to level (only slightly nose high)?
Do those small front wheels on the floats get worn out quickly?

And, for take-off, do they do a soft-field type of procedure to get into ground effect early?

Winchester is a great little airport. I learned to fly out of Front Royal, but did most of my flying out of Winchester. My first solo was out of Winchester, but that was AGES ago.
