I'm a complete Gray Market novice, so pardon the ignorance. Is there a quick visual way to see if it was at some point, "federalized". I don't have much faith in the EPA being able to dig up the paperwork. Is the paperwork necessary? Are many 400i illegals? And if so, aren't they subject to governmental seizures.

Usually there is a plate/sticker in the door jamb that notes all of this stuff. If the car is over 25 years old, then who cares anyway right? Since DOT/EPA don't apply to those cars...who is to say it wasn't imported yesterday? So I wouldn't think there would be a big fuss if the car is a 1983 or prior with no EPA/DOT paperwork.

Then again, I could be wrong...

I have EPA/DOT paperwork on my car and there is no sticker anywhere other than the factory stickers.
But let's also remember that while I have those documents I also do NOT have any US marker lights on my car. This also held true for the 400i I owned previous to this one.
    You explain how that happened.

Slick talking buyer who put it through an RI that was willing to bend a bit on things. I did the same thing w/ my 1992 EURO 928 GTS 7.5 years ago! Pretty cool! No US side markers, no rear bumperettes, changed the head and driving lights back out for the EURO models... Gotta love it! I suspect back in the '80's when the 400's were coming in it was even looser!

I've got the same plate (what all that mumbo jumbo means I don't know), paperwork, side markers, MPH speedo sticker, & that's it.
No seatbelt warning light, unleaded fuel stickers inside or out, no restrictor (for unleaded fuel) @tank fill tube, no cats, no air pumps or assoc. air poll. controls.
Beings that you're in Fla. & there's no emissions testing anymore, I wouldn't be too concerned about it, especially if it's got the full 17 digit chassis # (w/ law enforcement check digit & all that jazz), & carfax's fine (no title problems, etc.). I would think to get titled in any state, import/EPA paperwork would have to been in order to some degree. If it's here & has been titled/carfax is fine, I'd say no worries even if it doesn't have supporting docs.

The inspection station signed off on it maybe. I've heard that many who've imported these would bring them back to euro spec. after sign-off. Shaving side markers & repaint is a 'bit of an undertaking' but I wouldn't hesitate if I were to put mine into the spraybooth.

So, you do have the EPA/DOT paperwork? The chassis number on the steering column is 5 digits, in my quick inspection of the car, i haven't seen any 17 digit vin.. and shouldn't it be on the column? The car is apparently Florida titled.

First find out what model year the Feds consider the car to be. My car, for instance, was built in early calendar 1983 but in the U.S. it is titled and registered as a 1984 model year. Why, I have no idea.

If the model year is 1983 or earlier, then apparently there is nothing to worry about. If 1984 or later (and 400i production ended in February 1985 so there is not much later for the 400i), then getting the EPA/DOT certificates is a good idea, even if the car has been registered elsewhere in the states. I can't speak for right now, but 10 years ago when I bought my 1983 400i, I had no problem getting confirmation copies from both the EPA and DOT.

    Apparently the same with mine.

Yes sir on the paperwork. Unlike the mass imports of other Ferraris to the US, every 400 series car I've run into has only had the last 5 of the VIN on the column. However, the full 17 digit VIN appears in 2 places, (1) a mill finished alum. plate printed in blue pop-riveted to the right-hand firewall of the engine bay &, (2) on the top front shock mount (same side), peer thru between the cold air intake tube & the motor oil dip stick.
Noticed your Testa on Ebay, good luck.

Call Richard(Dick) Merritt at 202.366.5300. He will be able to tell you if the car is here legal and if so, supply you with a copy of the DOT Release letter. He will also refer you over to the EPA person who will get you a copy of the EPA Release letter...

Thank you guy for all the info, at least now i have a proper course of action.

And yes, its my 87 TR on ebay. I've commited to removing the reserve after i get 5 bids as long as its before 1 day of closing. So, essentially, some lucky guy is gonna walk off with my bullet proof car for a song, which loosely explains my current craving for a ferrari replacement, ence the 400i. I've actually pretty much commited to trading both my 71 xke 2+2 auto and my 72 RR silver shadow for this (pardon my french) lump of a car. I need my head checked, but somehow the more i see those beautiful lines the more i gotta have it!

WOW...going from a TR/XKE/RR to a 400i? Or did I miss something? I would think a 456 would be a good place to go from those three...

Welcome to the club! Yes they do have beautiful lines, you're amongst a minority. I think the XKE would be enough to cover a decent 400 unless the RR is $$ for maintenance update + extras.

The 456 just doesn't do it for me. Additionally, i'm trying to trim/change my toy assortment; i would like to get tr3 or packard or anything else that is open top and semi-agricultural.

Honestly, i'm having second thoughts about trading, but i am ready to see these cars go. I should sell them outright... we'll see. If the xke was a 4 speed and numbers matching, i'd never get rid of it, as mine is mechanically much better sorted than most. The RR actually is all there, although it would benefit from a rebushing of the front end, but it is otherwise a good car.

+1, almost looks like a borrowed design of Porsche.

+1 again, love those XKEs, especially the latter 60's 3.8 & 4.2s. Selling outright's the ticket if you have the patience to deal w/....

Interesting note on the 456 that is looks "borrowed" from Porsche...maybe that is why I like it so much! I had not thought about it from that perspective, but I have always thought of it as the ultimate GT car and really the only competition for my beloved 928's!

As for agricultural and TR3...does not get more agricultural than that! They used tractor motors for most of the Triumph line of cars! I grew up with a Spitfire and LOVED (actually STILL LOVE) that car. If I could find MY Spitfire (even though I would not be able to drive it) I would buy it just because it means so much to me emotionally and I would just display it and let he wife drive it around the block from time to time. Really no good to drive if you can't fix it on the road side. My dad LOVES TR3's! My mom was pregnant with me and driving around in one of their TR3's...back in '64! Very cool cars. My dad could tell you just by the way they sound when you start them if it is a TR3!

Best of luck in your search. I would LOVE to add a V12 Convertible automatic E-type to my collection sometime!

    Best,
    James

I do like the 456....but I really can't stand the frameless windows. That really bugs me about the car quite a bit. And I like the 456 series 1 hood better, with the vents, but I like the 456 series II (456GTM) has a better interior and lots of other little updates that I like.

And forward a little bit, I don't mind the 612 exterior, but the interior is just SILLY.

The windows don't bother me from a look standpoint, but I understand they have had PLENTY of issues with sealing, so it is unfortunate that the execution of the work sucked so bad! I totally agree on the series I hood and series II interior! Same on the 612, nice looking car all the way around, but there are things about that interior that are just out of place, I think you might could say that about the 599 as well...

Oh, what does the 599 look almost just like in profile???? Anyone, anyone.... Bueller, Bueller????

I think it looks almost just like the freaking last series of Toyota Supra! Overlay a black profile view of each or just look at them full on side views and see if you don't agree. Now, that is no bad thing, I ALWAYS thought (and in fact look forward to owning some day) that the Supra was an attractive car...I love the look of the 599 as well! If only I had a spare $300K burning a hole in my pocket! LOL!
