I got the black car almost 9 years ago - it looked pretty good, but had a lot of mechanical/electrical issues. I feel like I've taken a so-so car and have made it into a consistent 94-point car which is about as good as you're going to do on a vintage Ferrari and still drive the hell out of it. And having participated in the Pebble experience w/ the Mondial, I've had the ultimate concours experience - don't need to do that for awhile. While I will miss the locomotive, on-demand power of the 4.4 liter V-12, the queen is a big damn car (still the biggest Ferrari ever made) and it drives like it. It is a grand touring car and definitely not a sports car. The other part of vintage Ferrari ownership that is troublesome is the nearly complete lack of parts. Even if you do your own work, there's always the nagging feeling that you're living on borrowed time w/ things like the motor and that, even when you know all the few source people, trying to get crucial parts is ungodly expensive. I'm done w/ cars that don't have parts catalogs, at least for now.

Having a car that I just polish and change fluids on is not fun for me, so I need a new project. I was thinking series I e-type coupe, but think I would fall back into the concours trap and I've also already done plenty of British restos in the last 20 years.

I've been drinking the Alfa Romeo kool-aid that Sam Smith, Richard Garre and my friend Harlan Hadley have been offering - and I've drooled over the old Alfas at Richard and Fernando's shop. I think a late 50's Alfa Giulietta Spider would be right for me and I would transplant a later 1750 or 2000 motor into it, switch the brakes to disc, etc. It's Italian, but won't break the bank!

That's funny Bryan - I heve been looking at 50's early 60's Alfas too. For the same reasons

Ken, your in-motion shot of 11199 is my alltime favorite shot of the car. The next would be Ed's mirror-reflection shot of my door at Richmond last year. I always give photo credit to you guys when I re-post those pics and I really appreciate the high level of photography we enjoy in this region w/ you guys and Bill Proctor (looks like I'll have to add Warburton, jr to the list!).

Of course, I sent my ad to Ferrari Market Letter about 48 hours before Wall Street went into the toilet, so I might be owning it a bit longer. I'm not getting misty-eyed just yet.

I met Harlan in 1981 when he was one of my architecture professors. Awesome guy, and he has a very serious garage; also has Ducati frames mounted to a wall in his house as art.
