    Greetings all -

I have been thinking about fun things for Christmas - I think my children (and ME) would enjoy a really cool SCALEXTRIC set - Formula One.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a place to buy? I have seen all the listings on ebay - but I'd like to find a specialist retailer that could keep me supplier with all the lastest stuff.

    Thanks for your help.

I had excellent results with these folks:

    http://www.fantasyworldhobbies.com/

They were friendly and price competitive. Also you will want more track pretty much right away and scaletrix offers cheaper sets (like Nascar at one time) that have throw away cars and lots of track for the $$.

Pretty much the best cars in terms of detail were from Fly and any car without a magnet (which is what comes in the cheap set) will not hold the track in a way that most kids will find fun. It appears now that other manufacturers are offering nicely detailed cars as well.

I have a couple of Fly cars that I hated to see hit the track and inevitable destruction.

Good luck and remember your buying it for your kids so let them use it too!

Had lots of luck here. Guy's a little eccentric, but has the goods.

You realize, that you also need to get a couple of Carrera F1 cars: Ferrari and Sauber e.g. as the Scalextric set comes with the "wrong" cars from Williams and Mc Laren...

Check on ebay. LOTs of Scalextric stuff...but as to cars themselves, I think Fly is better

I'd say Fly is different. Fly has some gorgeous Ferraris (512 M) without magnets. The Scalextric have magnets for the most part. Also Scalextric often has lights (not in F1 of course).

However don't make the magnets a reason to buy or not buy a car: Magnets can be easily added or removed in these cars, not a big deal.

Actually even picking a manufacturer (Scalextric, Carrera, Ninco) is not even a big decision as there are track adapters that let you comine different track systems together. Also of course all the cars work on any of the tracks.

I shop for cars from all the manufacturers. In a way it is a bit like collecting Ferraris in 1/32 scale.

When I was shopping last year I never found an online dealer that had much better pricing than I could get it locally. By the time you pay shipping, it was about even. I bought from a local store so I could take it home with me. If you go to www.towerhobbies.com, sign up for their online newsletter before you buy. The first thing they'll do is send you a $20 off your first purchase coupon. You can apply that to the race set.

If anyone comes across any of those 'deals' with throw away cars, post it! I'd like more track.

Good point. I ended up buying two of Scalextric's biggest sets plus additional tracks to make my setup which is now over 30 feet long.

I'm redoing the track as my winter project to improve a few things. Had some problems with the electrical contacts. Also the car collection itself grew over the year so they need some additional "parking area".

I just bought a huge Scalextric set from radtrax.com for $220-ish delivered. I haven't received it yet - it is on backorder :( It is a very large F1 set I bought for my 5-year-old. Jimpo recommended this brand because of its track is apparently more flexible than say Carrera. With 5-year-olds, flexible is always good. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS. Here's a photo/description of the set:

    Good pick!

I bought some additional of that light brown run off area so the cars get enough room to powerslide through all turns. The electronic counter is good, but I'm thinking about getting the one from Carrera which has a bigger display.

At any rate, enjoy your present!

As an aside, I just heard that Scalextric has obtained a license from Ferrari, so let's see what they come up with. There's also talk of die-cast Scalextric Ferraris, but I don't know what to expect there (scale?)

Cool! Now start shopping for different cars! I'd suggest the Scalextric Sport GT40's, they're very cool.
