Close call there. A couple of other Viper drives were not so lucky. A journalist got killed when he hit a pole and a younger driver was killed when he lost control of his blue coupe on a divided highway. NO Viper fan...

I was at the event when this happened. If anyone has been to VIR they know about the little dip going through the bend on the front straight which can make cars quite unsettled if not done properly...

The viper driver (with an instructor in the car) missed a shift, and well, you saw what happened.

I didn't personally see it in action, or directly talk to either of the drivers, but it was the talk of the weekend.

P.S. Surely someone else on this board was there that may have more details...

OMG close call. i cant beleive the guy in the M3 didnt jerk and lose control as well. Great footage

  17. I was an instructor for that particular event and was driving one of the two corvettes that pass just before the incident. There is an unsettling dip in the track surface just beyond start/finish at VIR. Having thousands of miles at that track I find it very hard for a driver to lose the car there but nonetheless it happened. The viper must have hit it just right with enough suspension travel to rebound the rear suspension significantly and induce the car into a slide.

It was one of those "one time" freak incidents that thankfully didn't evolve into something worse. The driver of the M3 never saw it coming and thank God he wasn't inches ahead otherwise there could have been a hard impact in a fast section of the track.

Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly...thankfully some of us have very fast angels.
