PUCALLPA, Peru - Hundreds of scavengers combed through the wreckage of a Peruvian airliner Thursday, carrying away scrap metal, passengers' belongings and electronic equipment that could have offered clues into what caused the crash that left at least 37 dead.

Dozens of air force soldiers stood by and watched as residents of this Amazon jungle town dug through debris of the Boeing 737-200 that crashed Tuesday, looking for anything of value.

I really couldn't believe this when I read it! The Peruvian Gov is being eggregiously irresponsible by letting this take place. What if the crash was due to a design flaw and crucial evidence is compromised by these people? I am just blown away by this. Disrespectful, irresponsible, and utterly unreal IMHO. :(

It's just amazing how people can act more and more like primitive animals when an event like this occurs.

They just get so crazy that they loose their ability to THINK and use common sense.

I had the misfortune of watching "Faces of Death" many years ago, and they were showing home footage of the aftermath of the airliner that crashed in San Diego around 1980-1982. Plane went down in poorer section of town and residents were picking up wallets, pulling jewellry off severed hands, nice stuff. fact is, we are still animals of opportunity.

I think it was '78; one of my law school professors was at USD at that time and actually witnessed the PSA plane and the private plane collide and the DC-10 crash. The footage that you are referring to is pretty disturbing and I would hope that, regardless of the "treasure" that is available for the taking that they wouldn't destroy evidence from the crash.

To us, it's a matter of ethics, to them, it's probably a matter of surviving.
I sure as heck can't blame them, although I hope we'll still find out why the plane went down.
edit-*uck! didn't notice that link was from ogrish. I'll just go throw up now.
