Notice it says he was caught "engaging in 'improper behavior' in his home" not on the laptop. A key distinction I'm betting...

You know how else they could have tracked down a stolen laptop? Track the ip address. Or freaking Lojack. Or bloodhounds. I really couldn't think of a worse plan than this.

He was counting Mike & Ikes. Those candy coated licorice things. Accused him of drug possession with intent to sell at school. If this is the same case.

Had the laptop been reported stolen? I haven't read that anywhere...

Other students are reporting the "green light" was illuminating at various times, but thought nothing of it. Lawyers are going to have fun with this one. If the kid was slanging pills at school or if they were really Mike and Ikes, the district is still screwed. Sad thing is the tax payers are paying for those school attorneys to fight this bull****.

This will no doubt, attract the attention of the Feds. Wiretapping laws, etc.

I imagine every 15-18 year old girl with these laptops would be freaked out right about now.

Interesting that it activates when the laptop is turned on, it probably is a anti-theft device, but still not acceptable by the school, especially not to warn people. I read an article about a year ago from a guy who set-up a Applescript to take a picture from the webcam whenever the computer was turned on and then to upload it to his Flickr account. He sent the laptop in for repair and has pictures of the guy who was working on it. I bet that is what happened but still unacceptable from the school.
