The lates issue of Time features the world's 100 most influential people. Listed among them is Michael Schumacher. While the article is only 4 paragraphs long, the most interesting thing about it is that the name Ferrari isn't mentioned at all.

Italiancars, could it be because the article was about the most influential "people" ? Enzo's son, while a "people" has never been very influential!

While I understand that the article is about "People", one would have thought they would have had a line something like, "Driving his red Ferrari, Shumacher has won 5 consecutive titles".

Other people that are listed have had their companies or team mentioned.

I just noticed something else, the article was written by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd fame and a long time collector of vintge Ferraris.

Michael is very influencial. I am sure he is going to influence the 2005, 2006 and 2007 World Championships too!

Well there is no doubt in my mind that the new rule changes are designed to end Michael's and Ferrari's dominance over the sport. It is sad that the rules have been designed such that Ferrari are at a disadvantage in almost every aspect of the sport. one thing that no amount of rule changes will ever take away is the fact that...

MICHAEL IS THE GREATEST DRIVER OF ALL TIME AND THE BEST RACER TO EVER DRIVE A RACE CAR!

I like both Michael and Ralf, but I am a bigger overall F1 fan. I think that he should have retired from driving after last season...He would have been offered any position with Ferrari, perhaps a design consultant maybe. Remember, records a set to be broken, and Michael has set most of them!
Imagine a limited edition Schumacher design road Ferrari. What a hit! What I am afraid of is what may happen is things get worse for Ferrari this season. We don't want to see him wind up like Senna! Knock on wood!

Not to take anything away from Schumacher, but I don't think he is even close all the wins & championships aside.

My vote would go to Nuvolari. One race will tell you all you need to know about him. It was a motorcycle race, Nuvolari had 2 broken legs that were in casts from a previous accident. He was strapped to his bike and had to be caught by the pit crew when he came in for refueling. He won the race!

    Now that is a racer.

Of course. If you set aside "...all the wins and championships" he would not be considered the greatest driver. However, you cannot make them go away.

Now, can you say he isn't without setting them aside? It's difficult to argue that someone isn't the best at what he does when he has won more then anyone else.

What else does he have to do?

First, the F1 World Championship didn't start till 1950, at a time when Nuvolari was 58 years old and still racing, he died 3 years later. So there is no way to compare championships.

If you want to look at just wins, Nuvolari would far surpass Schumacher because he didn't confine his racing to one particular area. If it moved, he raced it and won.

Most of Schumacher's wins have come when he's had a superior car to everyone else. Nuvolari was known for getting more out of his equipment than anyone else and winning against all odds.

There is a reason that Enzo said that he spent the rest of his life looking for another Nuvolari.

It's a shame that Enzo died 8 years before he finally arrived.

Novolari was great, but that doesn't make Schumacher a lesser driver. If someone thinks MS isn't the best all they have to do is go out and out-do what he as done. Schumacher vs Nuvolari will always be a fantasy arguement and nothing more. Fun debate but that's all because it can never, ever be proven one way or the other.
As far as living drivers he has no peer, period. Not until someone crosses the finish line first more then he has (just one of the double-handful of records he holds) should anyone claim to be better then he is. That is how the score is counted. So what he's in a hole right now? That's racing. He is still the best.

Food for thought on the Nuvolari/Schumacher comparison: When Tazio hung it out to win a race he was risking not only broken bones, but the unfortunate and violent end to his own life. While F1 is still a dangerous sport, it is nowhere near as violent or tragic as all motorsports once were. If you are trying to rationalize the "Greatest" of all time, does raw courage figure into the equation??

I would offer that one driver that bridged the gap between the days of mayhem and the current "safe" environment would be AJ Foyt. (The original one, not the grandson- he can't get out of his own way!!) Like Nuvolari he raced everything he could ge this hands on, and he won. He lived and he won, over the course of 30+ years. Between staying alive and winning a ridiculous number of races he would get my vote for best of all time. (May I confess here that I'm headed to Indy for the 1st time in just over a month??)

Being fast without danger is still being fast. Being fast when your life hangs in the balance is the singular ability to ignore mortality while performing at an extreme level. I have met more of the former than I have of the latter.

As I said: Food for thought..

    Cheers,
    dce

Please don't think that all that mattered to Enzo was how many races a driver won. The driver with the most wins in his era (Fangio) Enzo didn't consider the best driver. He always thought Moss was better.

I think it only mattered how many races a driver won in one of HIS cars, then. He would be more then proud to have MS under his wing.

No, that sounds like a mad man. Nuvolari was great and nothing can be taken away from that.

BUT MICHAEL SCHUMACHER REMAINS THE GREATEST RACER OF ALL TIME.

Drivers like Senna and Moss were above average F1 racers who enjoyed a few decent years.

Imperial you don't know **** about racing your a mindless stat freak. All you do is speak crap about stats. Schumacher is great, what do you know about Nuvolari, Moss, and Senna? Above average. Your a moron, start watching some old races and learn a thing or two. Thank god for the ignore button. Your a wimpy putz that is too scared too put any information on his profile, figuring someone might kick your ass.

You are free to PM me and ask me any question regarding my personal information you please... name, place of residence etc. Several fchat members have asked me and recieved an answer. I just don't want any one on the internet having access to it and I don't want my public profile to bring unwanted traffic to ferrarichat.

I have watched almost all F1 races that Senna and Moss drove in and have them as part of my extensive F1 video collection. Furthermore I have written two articles on the life of Tazio Nuvolari that were published by very respectable organizations. I have nothing to prove to you and will not justify your ignorance by responding in kind.

Michael Schumacher will always be better than Moss, Nuvolari and Senna. Infact I will go further more and say that Senna was not even half the racer that Michael is. Michael's actions and performance speak for themselves. I pitty those people who blindly pray the Senna God because of his personality and not because of his achievements.

No need to PM you, this is my last post with anything that has to do with you. Again as I said you don't anything about racing. To make comments about Moss and Senna, watch qualifying idiot. Your constant berating of Montoya and Sato and lack of knowledge, I am surprised you have been watching F1 racing since 99. Senna God? Moss ? Again Stat Freak get a life and learn something. By the way I am sure anybody on this site who knows anything about F1 things your a Moron with a Capital M.

Actually one of (many) MS's strenghts is just that: Get more out of a broken/underperforming car. That's how he won his first title (Senna's untimely departure helped of course). That's how he drove around a Benetton stuck in fifth gear. He learned all that while driving for Sauber and Merc.

I know little about Nuvolari (my bad), but he was one of the greatest, no question. However Schumacher himself didn't want to be compared with the heroes of the past (especially when he was about to eclipse Fangio's 5 titles) because you can't compare with the past: Different times, vehicles, conditions, points systems, risks. Schumacher said he wouldn't have driven in a dangerous car Nuvolari drove. There is actually a funny pic of Michael driving an old F1 car wearing his F1 helmet, whereas the old guy in the other car wears his leather cap.

Imperial I think you are not giving enough respect to Senna, but that's your choice.

Senna1994, please no name calling on here. I disagree with Imperial as well on this, but please no name calling.

PS: I'm no MS fan btw. But you guys know that already.
