He stood in a queue without being recognized as World Champion. MS:"I find it very nice. It is interesting and nice to be moving along and not be recognized," something that would never occur in Europe" http://www.motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=156921&FS=F1
Yea we're pretty laid back here.... I used to eat at a restaurant with Stevie Ray Vaughan, every body left him alone 'cus he was "home" ya know? I still see AJ Foyt sometimes, in Waller. Mario Andretti at his winery is pretty low key too. I like what Niki Lauda said in Autoweek not too long ago, "Why are they afraid of the fans? The fans are just people, too." lol! I was pretty close to MS at the first USGP, I think he is just nervous when the crowd gets too big, heck I would be too!
Yup, we are that laid back down here. No sense in causing a stir because of one or two individuals. I would usually see Tommy Shannon out walking around. No sense in bugging him. Or even Charlie Sexton driving around in an old 911 or an entirely flat-painted classic roadster (custom built). They are just like individuals and can blend in quite easily down here. I'm glad Schumi got a break from it all. But then again, what do you expect, when attending a circle track in the states? I found it very odd that during the biker weekend, when Dennis Quaid had his gathering at the hotel down the street, there were people waiting to catch a glimpse of him and his entourage. Very very unlikely to see this kind of behaviour in Austin. Why was I there? To meet my dad for dinner.
Kim Ritchie moved over from nashville..she told me she liked it there. shes's cute! Jimmie Vaughan still hangs with the hot rods doesn't he? The Cool Car Club, IIRC
But if you would come accross him and you got your Ferrari cap with you , would you ask him to sign the cap ?
I have two signed caps already...Todt and Barichello signed my Indy Program, and the whole darn crew duct taped the Marlboro Logos on my Tommy Hilfiger jacket! They were afraid they would make the TV... Now THAT's service.... Saw David Coulthard too but he was eating a plate of food walking down Pit Lane... I didn't bother him he had a rough day! MS buys horses here in Texas, I'll keep a look out.....
I actually think it might even be better if you did recognized him and he saw you noticing him but simply smiled and waved. He's probably not used to that at all. I really don't blame the guy for wanting to get away for a little while. Not that I feel sorry for him but I know if I was swarmed everywhere I went that I would really look forward to a little bit of being unknown.
I agree, you can ask him to sign something when you come across him at a F1 GP or a related event, not when he's 'incognito'. But then again, to be able to come across him at a F1 GP you have to have all sorts of badges and passes to come in the pit area. So the chances of being able to meet him are not very high.
I've got a red "Marlboro" hat that Michael signed for me (at my then-wife's request) in Monaco one time, but we were at a Marlboro promotional event during race week, not just wandering around town at the time, so seeing him up close wasn't a big surprise. Everyone was shouting at him in French, which he doesn't speak, so we had the presence of mind to speak English and he was happy to sign the hat for me.
