I think Michael will be waiting to see how this season goes before making any decisions about his future. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Who is Rossi? Yeah, I know who he is. And he didn't really impress anybody with his times at Fiorano. They were polite so they didn't knock him down. But he is not a natural on four wheels. As far as MS and an extension is concerned: Please not. Retire gracefully while you can.
There is absolutely no reason for shuey to retire, he is still by along way, the the best driver in f1(ever). He's still the fastest, the fittest and the most passionate about F1 on the grid. He has nothing to prove, he loves driving and what is the harm in that? I'am sure he will know him self when its time to retire. I'am looking forward to celebrating when he win's his 10th title
I wouldn't retire if i were in his shoes either, As long as i don't notice a drop off in my abilites. 10 titles? Won't happen.
I had a chance to meet Jean Todt back in Oct 2004 before the Suzuka race. I met him at Ferrari of Beverly Hills. He was there for a party in his honour. I got chance to speak with him and one of things I asked him was when is Micheal retiring. He responded and said Micheal could be with Ferrari for another 5-6 years.
I don't think Schumy will decide anything until further on this year. If things keep going the way they are now I don't know if he'll want to risk not being on top for his last years.
Being with Ferrari doesn't necessarily translate into driving for the Scuderia. At any rate I don't want to see another Alan Jones or Nigel Mansell "comeback" and I would like for Michael to live a healthy and happy life with his family. No Regazzoni, Streiff or De Angelis either. Michael had many close calls in his F1 career and he has nothing left to proove. The only record to break would be Senna's number of poles.
He will stop after the 2006 season. If he continues, RB will stay. I can't see MS with KR as a teammate. (or Alonso, Massa)
ROTFLMAO If Jean Todt ever looks for the most loyal fan of the Scuderia, we will have to hand him Imperial: "Ah, voila, vous etes Monsieur Imperial? Bienvenue. I 'ave 'eard of yu."
Rossi has never participated in a racing car series. (on 4 wheels) If Ferrari wants an Italian F1 driver to replace Schumi or RB, I'd go with Fisichella, Liuzzi or Trulli before Rossi.
And frankly I think Ferrari grew way smarter over the years and no longer tries to find an Italian. If the best driver is Italian, they'll sign him. But only then. BTW: Rubens is half Italian.
Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking about Niki's consultant role he played for years after his retirement.
I agree 100%. The great thing about Micheal is he is one of the few that actually enjoys what he does. This is why I think he will retire until 40. Remember Damon Hill retired something like 39 or 40.
Rossi has participated in WRC with rather mediocre results, but it was just for fun for him. He has tested the Ferrari F1 car and was about 3 seconds off the pace of Schumacher. That sounds like a lot, but considering it was Schumacher's car on Ferrari's test track, and Rossi is not a car driver (yet), it is a pretty good indication of his ability. Nonetheless, I can't see Rossi going straight from MotoGP to Ferrari F1, more like Sauber for a year or two, then the Scuderia. Rossi has a special charisma that has not been seen in the F1 paddock for years. John Surtees has picked Rossi as a potential F1 champ (Surtees is the only rider/driver to win both top motorcycle and F1 championships). Back to Schumacher. Maybe he wants a triple digit number of wins. Maybe he wants even more championships, pole record, oldest winner record. If he has the ability and equipment, why not? Imagine how boring your life would be after being at the pinnacle of motorsport for so long.
Looking at the dry qualifying times for races this year, there is a 5-8 second gap between the sastest and the slowest cars. Assuming that this is normal, Rossi's pace would put him mid pack in a F1 grid the first time in a F1 car. (Assuming that Schumacher would have the pole on his own test track). Given this, I still think that he can and will be the one to beat in F1 when he makes the change.
Good post Fred, but that still does not make Rossi a F1 candidate. Remember Rossi tested in the very best car ... thus put him in a mid-field car and add on his personal performance and he would be at the very back of the grid if not off it. I still think he may be able to do it ... but so far he has only played at the 4 wheeled stuff. When he puts his mind and heart into it then we will see! Pete
I would love to see Rossi do well in F1, but so far we have seen no evidence that it can or will happen. I am also not convinced that Rossi really wants to do it. He really enjoys Moto GP and his victory celebrations have become legendary. In F1 he won't be able to celebrate a win by doing do-nuts or burn-outs. I wonder if he will feel too restricted in F1. If he manages to make the transition to F1 and becomes a Champion he will have acheived something truly legendary. Back in Surtees' day drivers weren't as specialised as today. Nowadays you won't see an F1 driver seriously competing in another series. Everyone just sticks to their own thing.
Thank you! I guess you will never know. Back to the topic: Michael is his own man and will do what he wants. Ferrari will keep Michael on board no matter how long he decides to continue racing. The sad part is most people do not realize that we are seeing the greatest F1 driver of all time race. No other racer even comes close to his greatness and there will never be another Michael Schumacher!!!
There is no doubt in my mind that Alonso will be world champion one day and Kimi will also be world champion one day... but they will be wearing a red racing suit and helmet on that day too! But no one will even come close to the greatness of Michael Schumacher.
