In the days before his final of 250 Grand Prix appearances, Michael Schumacher in Sao Paulo visited the grave of his late rival, Ayrton Senna.

Although many fans of Brazil's triple World Champion, who died at Imola in 1994, never forgave Schumacher for celebrating his victory in the tragic race, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reports that the retiring Ferrari driver 'visits Senna's grave most years'.

At Imola, Senna was leading Schumacher - who later in 1994 controversially won his first title - when the 34-year-old speared fatally into a concrete wall at the Tamburello corner.

"Perhaps (Schumacher) was also looking to close that chapter in his racing career before saying his farewell," dpa speculated of Schumacher's latest visit to the Senna grave.

+1, Schumacher always seemed to respect Ayrton and vice versa, I remember that when MS arrived on the scene, Senna kept an eye out open for Michael.

    That was the race.

It was one of races I will always remember.

That is also the race where I have some of MS's race worn/signed items along with programs, media info etc.

This was at Monza, not Imola and it was the race where a marshall was killed although I don't think Michael knew until after the press conference about the Marshall.

At Imola in 1994 I think Michael was criticised for punching the air as he crossed the line to win the race. I don't think he knew then what had happened to Senna. These 2 YouTube clips seem to condradict each other as one shows a happy Michael and the other shows him looking sad and respectful:
WARNING! The first clip shows footage of Senna being given first aid.

Also, while I'm being pedantic, the news item about him visiting Sennas grave shows a picture of the Senna memorial at Imola, not his grave. Pictures of his grave here: http://www.motorsport.com/photos/select.asp?Y=2003&S=F1&E=Brazilian_GP

Actually, not true. He said in interview yesterday that he did not visit Senna's grave. here is the excerpt.

Q: You said that you would only retire when you no longer felt competitive, so do you not feel competitive now? And also, is it true that you visited Ayrton Senna’s grave yesterday?

MS: For the first part of the question, I cannot see to be strong enough in the future to get the energy you need to be strong enough. It needs a lot of motivation, it needs a lot of dedication, and I have expressed this many times before. For the second part, I have not been at the place you have mentioned.

I am always amazed at the stories that get made up to drive magazine or web readership/circulation.

If I recall correctly, Senna was Michael's hero when he entered into F1.

There were two people in the early days that he respected, Mika and Senna.
