Some 400cc-650cc maxi scooters can hit 90+, such as the Honda Silver Wing, Yamaha Majesty, and the Suzuki/Bergman offerings.

You didn't specify if it was a larger scoot or a smaller Vespa-sized scoot. 49cc's are lucky to hit 35, 125s are lucky to hit 55 or 60, and 250s can get to 70+... just from my experience.

What's the old joke about scooters being like a fat girl? Fun to ride but just don't be seen riding one?

    I've got a Vespa. With a good tailwind and a long stretch i can hit 40 mph..eventually.

The rule kinda doesn't apply here at the beach as even 'guy's guys' ride 'em. Thought i was over the phobia completely 'till just a few weeks ago some guy going the other way with a similar scooter waved to me as we passed.

    I felt like throwing up.

Showed him who's boss? Hmm. Good to see that 430s are about as good as a scooter.

dont underestimate the 49cc's....some of them are ridiculously quick (for its hairdryer engine size at least...).

in countries such as holland, belgium, france, germany etc these things are often driven by 16-18 year olds (until they can get their drivers license) and more often than not, modified. bored out to around 80cc's sometimes is pretty common...

i've driven on one that vmax'd at 140km/h (there's your 90). They're quite quick up to about 60 but insanely boring. a friend of mine used to have derbi something or other...just a 50cc but it was basically a supermotard, 6speed gearbox etc etc. Hugely fun compared to the other thing that went 35mph quicker.

If i ever lived in a busy town and want to go somewhere quick, I wouldnt mind one of those supermotard (basically a motocross bike but on slicks) 50cc's...although i'd probably want a 125 atleast!

...He was next to you at the last street light. When you took off, his suspenders got caught on you side view mirror. No matter how fast you go, the scooter will be slightly faster.

A man in a Ferrari 430 stops at a stoplight and a guy on a scooter pulls up next to him. The guy on the scooter leans over and takes an admiring look at the inside of the Ferrari and tells the driver that he has a really hot car. Well, the light turned green so the driver of the Ferrari decides to show off and peels out and leaves the guy on the scooter in the dust. Then, all of a sudden, he sees the scooter zip on past him. So, being a little cocky, the Ferrari driver floors it again and blows past the guy on the scooter. A few seconds later, he again sees the scooter zip on past him. So now he's a little irate as well as a little mifted that that scooter keeps passing him so he floors it until he is going over 100 mph. He thinks to himself that there would be no way that scooter could catch him now, but then looks in the rearview mirror and sees that scooter starting to catch up. He then decides to find out what that scooter really is and slams on his brakes. Then the scooter crashes into the Ferrari. After the dust settled, the Ferrari driver sees the scooter driver lying in the road and goes over to him and askes how he could go as fast as the Ferrari on a little wimpy scooter... The dying man replied, "I can't really, but my suspenders were caught on your side mirror...."

I have several Lambretta scooters, the baddest of which is a 200 with a TS1 kit that is reputed (I don't ride 'em myself) to exceed 90 mph. The guy I bought it from swore that he'd had it over 90 and the scooter mechanic I had test drive it for me said he did over 90 on it.

Of course he also said it was sucking small children off the sidewalk and into the carb as he went by, so he may have been a bit prone to exaggeration. Even if it will, I don't want to be on it at that speed and seems unlikely that a scoot with 2 persons on board could reach 90. Let's see, 1 cylinder = 90 mph so 12 cylinders should = 1080 mph, right?

A couple of years ago a friend on mine had a modified Italjet Dragster 180 and regularly fed it to a variety of exotic cars in the Ft. Lauderdale, FL area. With various aftermarket bits the little thing got to 60mph in under 4 seconds and 100mph in not much more. Some scooters (especially two strokes) can be made to be quite quick indeed!
