I got the exact same impression. That it was really really smooth. Almost like blue in a way. Very good but that was what they were trying to achieve.

FTR, mine was not, it was the 12. I think the place I got it had the 18 but not the sherry cask.

Try the Laphroaig quarter cask, made in the old-fashioned smaller cask way. Lovely

    This is what I have

    https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/yamazaki-18-year-old-whisky/

There is also the crazy 50 year one.

    https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/yamazaki/yamazaki-50-year-old-whisky/

There is extensive discussion about this in the Yamazaki owners forum. But you have to get three other members to vouch for you that are also yamazaki owners and have seen you actually drink your yamazaki in their presence. . that and a secret handshake. :)

Here 'tis (oops, sorry for the duplication; didn't see answer till after I'd posted. Judith and I just last evening finished the bottle of the 12 year-old we tried. Very nice 'scotch single malt' but nothing to write home about. The 25 year old is expensive - hereabouts $300-$360/btl. I'm 'stuck' with my Balvenie 12 year-old.

Whilst I am on this thread, please let me bore you with a tale and a very small but delightful recent acquisition. When I was much younger, my dad had a friend and client who each Christmas for several years sent him a gift that seemed to me positively regal. It was a very beautiful Baccarat lead crystal decanter and stopper, presented in an elegant silk-lined case, green exterior if I recall. The decanter contained 750ml of Courvoisier VSOP cognac, retained by a cork as the stopper rested in its own little niche in the case. The cognac was consumed by Mom and Dad in due course and the decanters used to contain other spirits. When I got out of the Navy and had my own quarters Dad gave me one of them. It still contains Courvoisier VSOP. I just recently acquired another identical decanter and this morning opened a fresh bottle of Balvenie 12 year Double Wood and decanted it into the Baccarat decanter that I find almost indescribably pleasing to the sight.

Excellent! That looks like a beautiful decanter. :D

One small word of caution though, just in case anyone doesn't know this... while I'd be happy to drink whiskey poured from a lead crystal decanter after only a few hours (and have enjoyed doing so!), I wouldn't store any drink in such glass for any significant length of time. Lead seeps from the glass into the liquids stored within and so would be consumed with the dram. You can exceed the safe limits accepted for drinking water in ~2 days and exceed them by a factor of 100 after around 4 months of storage. The best practice is to only put into the decanter what you anticipate driving that evening - for that reason, the decanter is best shared with friends/family in a single evening. ;)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Dottore! I'm exceedingly grateful for your admonition. Wish I'd had it couple of days earlier since I decanted a fifth of Balvenie 12 year Doublewood into it a few days ago. Prompted by your comment I've done the confirming research and 'recanted' the malt back into its original bottle while I decide whether or not to risk consuming it. The scotch was in the Baccarat just 24 hours.

    Again thanks.

Gentlemen, I have reached the pinnacle, and from here there is nowhere to go but down. Many, many thanks to the finest bartender in all the land for allowing coledoggy and myself to have a small sampling of Last Drop 1960. They normally sell this for $240 a pour I believe. There are no words to do this magical elixir justice. It is a blended Scotch, and you can distinctly taste the various parts of Scotland, from a twinge of smoky Islay peat overlayed on Highland brightness....it's literally like all your best scotches rolled into one, and you taste them all together yet all separately at the same time. It is mind blowing. Maybe even life changing, because now I would absolutely consider paying $240 for a drink, where I never would have before! ;) if you ever get the chance to try this stuff, you owe it to yourself to do so.

Wives? GFs? Or, is this stuff that good?

Seriously though, very interesting story behind this scotch - sort of Johnnie Walker meets Indiana Jones. Thanks for sharing...T

Ha! That's a fantastic way of putting it. I've been reading up on it since our tasting, and your description is just perfect! One article I read said only 350 bottles were ever brought into the US, the fact that we have one here in Hattiesburg, MS is pretty amazing to me. I just can't get over the effort that went into making this stuff. Such a cool idea and cool story. I'm glad the world has people crazy enough to do things like this.

As insane as it sounds, I gotta say it may just be worth it. It is that amazing. Let's see, at $4K per bottle that would be about $160 an ounce. One could easily sit and savor 1/2 ounce for an hour. Say you do that once a month, your bottle would last about 4 years. Seems almost sensible....

Alright, can somebody please slap me and tell me to go back to enjoying my $50-ish bottles of scotch. Enough of this crazy talk. The cheap stuff tastes just fine! :D

If you can afford it and enjoy it that much, why not? Especially if you parcel it out as you said. Life's too short - 4K for four years of happiness is an uber bargain in this day and age. Obviously, it's your 4K & just my two cents! :) ...T
