my windshield has a 3" scratch on the inside right in the eye-line above the binnacle. It would seem that a factory windshield has a plastic layer exposed on the interior side.

Anyone know ways to make the scratch seem less visible or otherwise fix it?

I replace my windshield and the original didn't have anything but glass on the inside.
Could you have an aftermarket film like tinting on it?

Any regular DOT approved windshield is laminated glass. Two pieces of glass with the plastic layer sandwiched between them. It should be sold glass inside and outside the car. I'm with Mark, it's likely a film applied like window tint.some product to cut glare or block UV from ruining your dash. Peel it off and leave it or replace it with similar.
My 355 had a tinted windshield when I got it. Some states you can get a special waiver if you have medical conditions to tint the windshield x percent. It was illegal for me to have mine tinted but I never removed it and no cops ever cared..

I am assuming it is plastic film because it scratched so easily. a better word would be gouged you can see it and you can definitely feel it. I can't imagine glass scratching so easily. Having said that, the windshield does not look like it has any plastic film on the inside that would be aftermarket. There is no visible difference between the side windows and the windshield with regard to darkness etc. unless it is 95-100% tint film. Could be some anti-glare, or it could be the glass is scratched. This is a factory logo windshield.

There doesn't seem to be any tint or film of any kind on any of the other windows. I'll look closely at the windshield but I suspect there is nothing aftermarket. So that would mean the glass is scratched, so then, how do I fix it or make it better.

I wonder if a good glass shop can epoxy and polish or something.

Many (if not all) states do not allow any tint level on the windshield, so you wouldn't see any tint color on it at all. The only reason one puts film on the windshield (legally) is to block UV. I tinted my entire car, and the windshield got the transparent UV block only, as to help prevent dash sun damage.

Take it to a local tint shop and they'll tell you for sure if that's what is on there. It was only $100 for me to have the windshield done this way, so even if they can't repair it, it's a cheap fix to have it completely recovered anyway.

You could have a auto glass repair shop touch it up, your insurance company would probably pay for it.
