After watching the SPA race it finally dawned on me. F1 doesn’t need engine changes, or aerodynamic restrictions, or revert to non ceramic brakes, or any of the other proposed changes. All we need are better tracks, like SPA. I didn’t realize how much a track effects overtaking or makes for a good race until Sunday.

    I’d like 2 rules changed:

    1. The one engine per weekend rule. If you change it you are penalized 10 places. This only hurts the mid-pack to small-teams. How often has a Ferrari engine exploded? Rare to none.
    2. Teams should be allowed to put fuel in the car after the qualifying.

One last thing, I hope the Hungaroring is never run again. That was the most boring race in history.

When the FIA was considering rule changes a few years ago, which resulted in the points payout for the top eight cars, no engine swap, and so on, one of the ideas discussed was to add weight to the cars as the season progressed.

I think this would be a great idea, with 0.5 kg (or some agreeable number) added for each point scored. The front runners would be weighed down as the season progressed. The weight would have an effect on virtually every aspect of the car: fuel consumption, tire wear, mid-turn dynamics, braking, everything.

It would benefit smaller teams which do not accumulate too many points throughout the year, their car would have an advantage by the end of the season as the Ferraris and McLarens have an extra 30 kilos to haul around.

But to get back to your post I think you are right about the tracks. Many tracks seem neutered by chicanes and more concerned about making sure there are enough luxury suites rather than a track which provides good racing.

Part of the uniqueness of Monaco, for example, was that it had this tiny pit area. Just navigating into and out of the pits was a challenge all its own.

While it would never happen, seeing an F1 race at the old 14 mile Nurburgring would be pretty awesome.

Spa makes the Tilke track look like the Mickey Mouse doodles they really are. Elevation change effect so much of the car's dynamics.

Adding weight to the cars is a old and poor idea. It is the same as the drivers behind saying "wait for me, wait up!" Is this racing or are you and your 10 year old friend riding bikes down a gravel road with your 5 year old sister catching up because your mom told you to let her bike with you?
    You tell me.

Takeing the wings down to the smallest degree can be a good idea.

I don't like weight penalties for success. It works in series' like the SpeedChallenge, where you have myriad manufacturers represented and it's a little more difficult to equalize the fields. But it has no business in F1. Teams spend ungodly amounts of money developing their cars, and if they can't use it properly enough to catch Ferrari, then Ferrari shouldn't be penalized by having weights bolted to the chassis. It's too artificial, like something out of "Atlas Shrugged". If they do that, why not impose aero penalties too? They could limit Ferrari's use of wing elements, or force them to use ultra-hard compound tires when they are dis-advantageous. They're all big boys in F1, and currently Ferrari provide the target to which they should aspire. Racing is cyclical, and just like Ferrari unseated McLaren, who unseated Williams, who unseated Benetton (sorta), who unseated McLaren who, well, you get the idea. I say they should let the bottom 6 teams run their third cars all weekend, even in the race. Perhaps only the top two should be points-eligible (not sure about that yet) but at least this way their sponsors would get a little more value for their money.

Money is another issue too. It seems that a lot of the changes are being made in the interest of keeping expense down. One area they should really reconsider is how testing is allowed. Its really a bit unfair and I would imagine expensive when the well-heeled teams do a testing session at a track a couple of weeks prior to a race. Why not just limit pre-event testing to the two days prior to the event? Then everyone gets the same opportunity and the expense isn't increased too much because the team is already there.

Make every track like Monaco and you'll have a different winner each weekend! Crazy, but true!

    Or...

Emulate the real world (and mid-race pace car) each race by having all contestants stop 5 minutes for a train. That'll bunch 'em up!

    ;)
