Not for the faint of heart! This follows from Pietro's report on his wondertful Platinum win at Monterey. Thought I would start a new thread just to make searches easier later. Pietro was penalized for the wrong screws - [They scrutinized the screws that fasten the rubber stops for the trunk, engine and spare tire compartments... mine were wrong...[should be Phillips] I checked the screws on my 1972 car, which has just over 10,000 miles and doesn't seem to have ever been restored. My (somewhat rusty) screws are - slotted! The 246 does seem to use some slotted screws (eg, the door pockets), so I assumed the screws on the stops were correct. Could the judges have been wrong? Would be interesting to see what others have. As an aside, I was just reading an ariticle in SCM on a restorer in the US. He says it is difficult now to get slotted or pan head screws - everything available is Phillips!
I think I found the problem... I had all basis covered ... 3 different types... Pietro Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Anodized (black finish) Philips in mine. And just about any metric nut, bolt, screw available here. http://www.metricmcc.com/ You need to do a little digging around, but they have them. Image Unavailable, Please Login
The correct door pocket screws are flathead, slotted M5 screws also termed "cheese head" with straight (not rounded edges). The first of the three in this image http://www.pts-uk.com/mmcdat.htm They always have them at the local StoneWay hardware store. I thought the correct trunk/bonnet lid rubber stopper screws were phillips head in a pan head style, not the combo Phillips/Slotted head. Thanks
