Whatever we think of him, I have TREMENDOUS respect for Luca; he saved the Scuderia twice from oblivion, and the first time at only 27 years of age: at the end of 1973, he managed Enzo himself and the volatile Forghieri to create the conditions of success, no mean fact... And then he was appointed again by FIAT in 1993 to take not only the responsabiliy of the Scuderia, but of the road cars as well. He was the one who recruited Todt (on the shrewd advice of Uncle Bernie...). Yes, Luca might have taken some questionable decisions starting 2007, but on the whole, I miss him a lot. ("It was only during the first months or so after his come back in 1993 that I saw "Luca Di Montezemolo" in him; after that, whener I saw him, I saw only Ferrari" Bernie Ecclestone)
Montezemolo had way more hits than misses. He was ousted mostly because Marchionne wanted to do other kind of business with the road car division, not because of the F1 team. Maybe he would be able to fix the Scuderia for the third time or maybe his time had passed, like happended to Frank Williams and Ron Dennis, we´ll never know. Anyway, that´s in the past, the best Ferrari is always the next one.
So true. We shouldn’t forget what Luca has accomplished for Ferrari. In 1992 Ferrari road car department and the Scuderia were in very bad shape. Hiring Jean Todt and the F355 were both strategical masterclass from Luca.
Oh don't get me wrong, absolutely correct! I have a huge amount of respect for him, very charismatic...but his big mistake was letting his ego take over the F1 team. If something isn't broke...don't fix it. And the F1 team was the furthest thing from broke at the time... I very much believe that without Luca, Ferrari would be long gone. Schumacher, Todt & Brawn are also to praise for that to a certain degree.
Leo turrini said that our motorists are convinced to have close the gap between us and Mercedes on the power unit side. He also said the car will have some bold innovative aerodynamic features which is worrying him. We can only hope Cardile and Sanchez have done a 2017 masterclass car again..
Ferrari and Ducati end their relationship with the tobacco giant Philip Morris. No more Marlboro or Mission Winnow branding.
Great news. Time for a new gen of Ferrari sponsors. That won’t be hard to find… it’s Ferrari after all. The biggest team in F1 with the best brand of the lot.
The money was good but also good to know Ferrari won’t be under the thumb of Marlboro when it comes to deciding other sponsorship and livery. Not to mention some didn’t like the optics of pushing cigarettes, though if it sells legally, not for Ferrari to be the arbiter of what’s healthy or not. Wonder if McLaren will drop (or did they already?) their e-cig sponsor? Or if those energy drinks companies or polluting oil companies will withdraw their sponsorships? Seems to me with all the schemes that Marlboro needed to get around the laws the message was so diluted as to not justify the money spent.

I am pleased PM are no longer involved. Tobacco sponsorship is not cool. I won't say that Marlboro F1 sponsorship started me smoking , that was just trying to look tough at another new school, but it did affect my choice of brand. That, and the superior flavour of a Marlboro red of course. I don't smoke now which is great, though there are times I miss it, like when stuck by the road after an engine gives up. Maybe SF will miss PM too if one of theirs does. JPS Lotus never had a chance, despite my 70s neighbour's foxy older sister being a JPS promo girl. Think sexy flared black pantsuit, fedora and black/gold company Ford Capri. Anyway that was the past and times change, for the better. Mostly

Tobacco sponsorship (and alcohol) were what funded the years we most remember (1980s-205-ish). Tobacco sponsorship was good for the sport and not so good for the consumers of their products.
