I've seen these quite a bit with friends and family so just though I would put the word out to my brothers here at FChat. Seagate drives have a well known firmware issue on some of their ST Barracuda drives that causes the drive to 'lock up' and not even be recognized by the BIOS. Basically the drive dissappears off the computer's radar as if it doesn't even exist. There is a fix for it however that will quickly restore drive functionality and all your data and doesn't cost $2000 from some ripoff artist. It does require a little MacGyver work with a specially modified cable and some Hyperterminal commands. If this sounds like your problem, let me know and I'd be happy to help. I've done it myself 2-3 times now.

Well, I haven't tried Seagate -lately-, but back in ~1986, I bought a 20M(yes, 20 meg) drive for all of about $200. Watched it blow up some months later, and decided then/there, no more Seagate for me.

Irrational? Yes, but, I haven't have any Seagates crap on me since then, either :)

I've been a Seagate drive guy myself, up until lately. But I've seen failures from just about every manufacturer over the years.

I have a very simple solution to this. Just get a western digital drive. They all fail over time, but WD drives give off a highly audible warning before going.
