Sorry in advance for this elementary question - at machine shop about to mate block to transaxle and don't see a gasket in my gasket set. Checked parts diagrams online and did not see one on relevant diagrams but on my iPhone which is not ideal. Is this join simply sealed with Honda Bond or something similar? Cheers, John

Flange sealant, loctite 519. Please don't use RTV it's not the right application.

Hmmm. I have 515 and 518! Thanks for your replies. Looks like another hard stop today. Will check into 519.

Good as I cant find any information on 519 :). I used the 518 on the sump cover so will have to order some more as I dont think I have enough to cover the area to seal. I need to update my rebuild thread as it is now starting to look like a real engine!

Permatex Moto-Seal (their version of yama or hondabond) has been my default sealer for several years now. Works great and is NOT a silicone based product that ends up gluing the parts tighter. It made my Norton Commando into a non-leaker! I'm not sure there is a better recommendation than that! :)

I have used the Permatex motoseal, Hondabond, etc and you have to work a bit faster than rtv silicone.

Thanks guys. I am going to go with the Loctite 518 as it seemed to give reasonable time for maneuvering the block into place. No doubt I will find another use for my tube of Yamabond.

Hondabond (aka Threebond 1134? or something) is the best stuff IMO. The Porsche 911 crowd all swear by it to join case halves, and I've used it for both 308 and Boxer motors now.

Used 518 with no issues or leaks. Minimum bead spreads out well.

+1 From experience, imho - I've found these products are not all created equal.

The issue with hondabond or threebond or any RTV type of sealant is that it's too thick for a machined flange seal as found between the block and gearbox. 515 & 518 are anaerobic sealants designed for just that type of mating surface and will not interfere with dimensional fitment.

sealants and greases are not a 1 size fits all approach, I'd love it if it was true as that would save me tons of money in plethora of sealants and greases I have to have on hand.

It's worth clarifying that "Hondabond" covers a wide range of sealants. The "original' and the one that is essentially the same as Permatex Moto-seal is Hondabond Ultra Flange II Sealant P/N 08718-0009. This is non-silicone and is what the factory uses for gasket-less sealing of direct-mating surfaces. That is specifically what it is designed for. Just as in "Permatex," The brand "Hondabond" also includes sealers such as RTV/other silicone based sealers. But all the direct-mating surfaces on Honda vehicles from the factory are sealed with P/N 08718-0009.
