I'm considering the purchase of a 412 and have a few cars to look at at various prices (£11,000 - £22,000). Does anyone have any advice about obvious pitfalls. Some are Automatic cars which I'm not averse to but I'm told the box on these is not the best. Anybody have any broad clue on average running cost for a good car and any pointers for service agents in the midlands. Any info appreciated

    Hi Tom welcome to Fchat.

Try searching the model specific forum for the 412 which is the Classic forum.

Generally agreed that a manuel Fcar is the only way to go.

From experience I used to have a V12 5.3 XJS which had a very similar 3 speed auto 0-15mph 1, 15-150+mph 2 & 3, to say you couldn't access the power of the beautiful engine is the understatement of the decade.

Hope that helps a little, good luck with the search.

    Cheers Kevan
:) See you down the road - with huge grins on both our faces :)

    Welcome!

Sorry- can't help with the 412 questions. Always struck me that they are great GTs, and with a V12 too which is nice. The fact that a great one can be had for £22k is a real bonus.

I think a manual will be more satisfying.

The only generic advice I can give is to get it checked over by an expert before committing.

I don't know where you are in the Midlands, but these are the only two I can think of, except PJ Evans (main dealers)

In fact, I notice Nick Cartwright (well respected specialist) has a 412 in stock...

    Good luck!

    Robert.

Many thanks guys for your very helpful replys. It would seem that manuals are the way to go (I'm awaiting info from Nick Cartwright at the moment re the one he has) but there's a lot more choice with the autos. I'm going to have a look at an auto close top me which is advertised as being on 17 inch alloys with an extra set of 15 inch. Funny thing is an old brochure I has specifies 16 inch! Still trying to get to grips with the real prices of these cars as they vary ridiculously.

    Hi Tom,

Welcome to the Board, I know of a nice red 412 auto for sale in the West Midlands and can put you in touch with the owner if you are interested?

I only recommend MDS Services in the Midlands, Mike Stirland is who you need to talk to about anything Ferrari, from a service to a full concour winning rebuild, ask anyone on this board how good Ray Fergusons concours winning 348 is. His phone number is 07802 983855.

Send me a pm with your phone number if you are interested in the red 412.

    Regards,

    Phil.

    Hi Phil

Many thanks for your reply. Would certainly like to know more about the Red 412. I'm waiting to see a manual car at the workshop of Nick Cartwright who is another Midlands Ferrari specialist who has been recommended and also another red convertible car in Derbyshire (see pic on another of my threads).

    Where are MDS located?

    Very much appreciate your input.

    Tom

There's a 400 for sale by auction on Tuesday the 14th,I think, somewhere in
    Stockport.
The auction is on behalf of the liquidators of Sant Agata, who were based in Manchester, there's also two Gallardo's up for auction as well.

Sorry to be a bit vague with the details,I only glanced at the advert, which is in the latest Top Marques, very briefly.

The lights are on but nobody's home! No answers to emails or telephone messages and no mention of any auction. There is a note on the website to the effect that they're not taking any orders.

Yes the estimate is high but that's not to say that the reserve wasn't lower than the estimate. Most auctions these days, cars and otherwise, prefer vendors to agree reserves lower than the bottom estimate (they usually suggest a new figure on the morning of the sale!). Looking at what fails to get a bid in single figures on ebay it does seem a bit strange to put these in at those levels.

Back to my earlier question, what are 400/412's actually worth?

2 years ago ex mcalpine 412 at H&H buxton £13k very tidy car just needed a slight manifold blow fixing (and a few electrical gremlins that took 2-3 hours)

400i's £1500 - £15000 with the high price being for a very very good car (rebuilt body, exhaust etc) and the low price for a rotten donor car
412's for 8k onwards to about £25k for a perfect car

Its a real pity as these are some of the most useable yet charasmatic cars Ferrari has ever built. if you havent driven one the first time you floor the throttle at 50mph is one to remember, all the bar room chat over the raw performance figures vanish's as you wail up the road.

although it can't be long until people recognise them as the last of the original Ferrari V12's with a direct history stretching back to the tipo125

if you find a good one you'll keep it, if you get a bad one you'll regret it, exhaust £1500 + £1200 for the manifolds, plus approx £500 to fit (with the 400i's you need to loosen off the front suspension to get the forward manifolds out, as well as remove all the injection kit!) body parts are almost unobtainable and these things dont rust they dissolve! not to mention the trick self leveling rear. the gearbox's dont have any problems as there the same GM300 box thats in every other top end car of the 70's-80's (Turbo r, xjs etc)

On the gearbox question, what percentage more valuable are the manuals?
