It's been about 3 months now since I started actively searching for a 355. I didn't think it was going to be this difficult. Each time I think I found the right one, it turns out to have issues or is sold already (I wish dealers would update their inventory). I have a local guy (Kip Sheward) looking for me but he hasn't come up with any leads.
There was a blue one in Atlanta with an accident history and major service overdue (http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=93914). I was STILL interested in buying but the seller was impossible to get a hold of, never answered his phone or his emails even though I made it clear that I want to buy his car.
I was the high bidder of a spyder (http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99279). The seller refused a PPI. After some digging I found out the car had major issues. Ended up paying the seller $83 for Ebay fees.
Last night I found the perfect one on exoticars.us (http://www.exoticars.us/gal_95fr355rd.html) at the right price. I just got an email saying it's already sold.
At this rate, the season will be over before it starts. I'm seriously considering getting yet another (4th) NSX instead.
I know patience is virtue, but right now I just want instant gratification.

You might contact Steve Barney at Sport Auto - they seem to have a knack for finding nice '80s and '90s Ferrari's. I bought from them in Dec.

    http://www.sportauto.cc/Ferrari.htm

Another place that seems to be able to find good cars is Motorcars International in Missouri. I haven't bought from them, but a nice 355 seems like something they could help you with.

I emailed needs and contact info to autosport.
That green is gorgeous... but I have to think about resale. I think I'll stick with the "basic" colors.
That 96 spider at Motor Classic is probably way out of my budget, but I will call anway.. you never know.
    Thanks all.

If you really love the color and the car checks out, buy it and drive it in health and happiness!

The resale thing should be a wash, no? The car may well take longer to sell and and you may well get less for it, but as a buyer that works to your benefit. Besides, once you buy it you won't be in such a hurry to sell.

If you are at the point of frustration and feel the search is a PITA, back away for a while.

    Thta's when you'll make a big mistake.

www.harrystoys.com does have a very nice car. I have seen the repair orders on this.

It looks like a very nice car.

Make sure you use InterCity for transport.

The search is a PITA! But at the same time it's fun and part of the story.

I was looking for close to 3 years for the right car, place, $, etc. What I came up with was a fraction of the cost of a 355 but it's the same game and worked well for my life.

In terms of "resale"...there are very few cars that in the long term can be considered an investment. If you like it, it's available, records are in order... buy it, drive it, enjoy it and get on with your life.

If you've got the "ching" to spend $85K+ on a weekend toy, a $5k difference on resale between a supposedly "good" color and an "off" color isn't that big of a deal.

I respect your desire to find exactly the right car...don't comprimise if you feel strongly about it. But remember, you can also get paralized if you nit pick every last detail.

    Good luck on your search.

I'm guessing that it is something absurd, so I will say $105,000.

Searching for three months? I've been searching for two years! The reality is a "good deal" will have some problem or setback that makes the deal not as good as you thought. And the car with every i dotted and t crossed will command a premium simply because it can.

The reality is you have to either settle for a subpar car at a discount, or pay the premium for the "right" car. Or else have the patience to shop but not buy.

    NICK,

For what it is worth to you I spent about a year and a half to find the right 355 Spider F1 car for me. There were other rock solid cars I liked but did not love. Figure out all the important details to you. Color, interior, F1 or stick and most inportantly what year do you want. Are you familiar with all the earlier model "challenges" shall we say?

Whatever direction you take, make sure as Sh#t that you get a complete PPI done, including the compression and leakdown of the engine, and make sure it is done from a Factory Authorized or a REPUTABLE independant dealer. I know of some nightmares stories and dont become another statistict.

Bottom line......"Plan the game and then play it"

    Onward bound...

    Cheers....Jeremy

Go to www.latimes.com, click on 'cars' on the top, plug in what you want.
I found 57 of them ranging in price from 77K to 130K.

And one F40 a guy has been trying to sell for at least 6 months.

What about a 1998 Black/tan F1 coupe? It's in Pleasanton, CA at Specialty Sales. Not sure if the service is up to date, but it looks like a presentable car when I saw it in person (didn't look at it TOO closely though). I did notice there was the typical dash leather shrinkage on the instrument pod. They wanted $80k, probably over-priced, but make 'em an low enough offer... they could accept it. :)

    Here was the link:

    Good luck with your search!

    We have a WINNER !!!

The asking price was only $104,000  I told the "Salesman" that you could easily purchase a '99 for that Price. He asked what i thought it was "Worth". I told him you would be fortunate to sell it for $80K. He laughed & i told him Good Luck !
