This is going to be my first post and I'm asking your help to find good pictures and info of the Pininfarina special from the 1969 Turin show ; the stunning yellow 512S designed by F. Sapino ...can you help me ? I always seem to get the same pictures and most of them of poor quality , anyone here with some good pics ?

I have a few from the Pininfarina Yearbook 1969 that I will scan for you next week that are seldom seen photos.

By the way, is this car still at DK Engineering??????????

I know it is in private hands, but who owns it??????

Sorry, having a tough time scanning from the Yearbook. I may just shoot the photos and download.

Have you seen this shot before? Not many shot of this prototype with bonnet and boot open.

here are two absolutely unique pics from the jochen rindt show in vienna 1970 showing the 512 S. i´m the boy in the pic (not the one with the stupid hat, but with the white pullover) ! the pics were made by my father. the back of the car seems to have lots of dents - i wonder how this could happen to a showcar.

When I did the research on the 312P V12 1969 cars for my Cavallino issue 99 and 101 two part article(this 512S is on the chassis remains of 0868, which Rodriguez crashed twice during the Monza 1000kms 1969) Jess Pourret told me he saw this car or an until now unknown twin in dark blue being driven in Italy in the very early seventies. This is obvioulsy extremely startling information but he was adamant, it was this car not the modulo not anything else. So was it this one or a second unknown car? Obvioulsy the car is supposed to be a non runner but might have been a complete running car for experimental purposes or for a VIP such as Agnelli? When the Italians don't want you to know they don't want you to know!

The bumps under the rare of the car in the Vienna photos posted by Michael might have been caused by the people pushing it onto the stand trying to lift the rear a bit to help it clear a high spot.

I saw the car at that museum on the Autoroute behind Cannes in the eighties, as far as I know it was owned by Andre Binda or Francois Fabre, whom I met when I did a story on his Bora Group 4 in 1995 in Paris. He was fantasizing about redoing a 312P out of it and putting the yellow 512S show car on another chassis! Nothing came of it though, as far as I know.

    Michael,

Yes, you have set a new benchmark!!! The period photos from the auto shows are fantastic!!!

    A job Well done, thanks!!!

I propose a thread on the Pininfarina Show cars? They are so wonderful and unique.

I absolutely love the "one offs" from Pininfarina from say 1966 through 1972.

I am quite confident that the 512s, unlike the P5 and P6 (I am not quite certain but I don't think the Modulo ever ran) was a runner. I recall a full spread article that was done on this car around 1989 or 1990 which had a picture of the car moving down the road among many other great photos. I am kicking myself to this day for not buying the copy. I think it may have been published in Motor Trend or Sports Car Graphic. It might be worth some investigation.

Not sure that it was as engine from 0866 was non running. Modulo was non running with a 512S engine without internals, 512S chassis and 603R gearbox. P5 was non running built on a 206s chassis with 312 F1 motor without internals and F1 gearbox. Could "running" photos have been staged? Coasting down a hill? There was also a P5 esque Alfa Show car.

It's Pininfarina collection, or I'm wrong?!

I visited their website just yesterday and I remind the location and some cars, specially the Mythos.

Another great place to visit in my beautiful Italy! Maybe a day... I have an uncle who lives in Turin (Torino) and I could pass from this museum!

Yes. There is some debate as to whether or not the Alfa P33, 1969 (again, Verde Germoglio?) was the P5 rebodied. Much the same can be said for the Alfa GS Roadster, 1968 being rebodied into the Alfa Cuneo 1971. There is some mystery surrounding this? But if the P5 was to become the Alfa P33 one year later, is the P5 that we see today a commissioned build by Pininfarina/Christian Philipsen?

P5's original body may have been used for the Alfa Show Car but it also may have been destroyed and that body may have been a replica.

P5's original 206S chassis/312 F1 Engine/F1 Gearbox survived in PF's warehouse and were restored by PF with a new body and sold on to Japan.

    Jim,

Thanks for the link. Very informative and looking forward to reading it in its entirety.

As you are well familiar with the life of the P5 through the years can you cast any light on the whereabouts of the Alfa GS Roadster, 1968? I do know that the Cuneo is in the Alfa Museum in Arese, but does that car even exist anymore?

I'm a complete nut for these wonderful cars....................just wish mine were the real deal!

Great pictures there. The third picture is especially interesting as it shows the size of the car compared to others beside it.
