1998 355 6 speed has high pitch whistle/whine which lasts a few mins until car warms up. It is coming from the secondary air pump. Do I have to replace it?

Does anyone have a photo of the location of the secondary air pump? Mine is a '99 Spider 6 speed!
On my last emissions test the report stated "Secondary Air - N/A"

You can see it in the owners manuel in a schematic and on the Ricambi web site. By the way, Ricambi lists it for $1100

The high pitched whistle started happening at 31k miles. I bought the car 2 yrs ago with 24k. It only happens on a cold start. Car starts and runs normally.

Yup, the whine I experienced was taken care of with a thorough cleaning. A little tight to remove the pump, but not difficult. I would add that one the pump is removed, be careful with the plastic grid that wraps the filter, it can be brittle so make sure you remove all screws and gently remove it to prevent breakage, it's pricey.

    Thanks guys
I think a gentle clean of the pump is first. If that doesn't work then a more severe cleaning of my wallet! Just in case!!

FYI - This pump runs on its own 15 amp fuse in the fuse box at the passengers feet. These very commonly blow fuses. Ferrari's cure was to swap a 20 amp fuse in. This pump was operating so close to 15 amp draw from the factory that as the pump ages it quickly draws more than 15.

If you are blowing 20 amp fuses you need to change the filter material.

All of these applied to my own 355 and putting in fresh filter material (generic, cut to fit) solved the problem of 20amp fuses blowing.

Putting a fuse larger than 20amp is not a good idea as it will heat up and possible melt the fuse holder.

My eventual solution will be to remove the whole damn system and kill the planet even faster.
