Is it an actual glass or polycarbonate of some kind?

The OE glass is called Macrolon, which doesn't sound like some sort of glass.
    Just for your interest.

Makrolon is Bayer's version(s) of polycarbonate, while GE calls their version(s) Lexan.
Here is what Wikipedia has to say about it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycarbonate and look under "History".

It's so you can watch as you throw a rod ... ;)

It reminds me of the old louvered windows my parents had in their early 60's California house. I had to replace and repair some of the glass in them and one day they all popped out all over my arms. I thought I was going to lose my arms but nothing broke.

I threw a golf club "threw" my parent's Jalousie windows when I was a kid while practicing my swing. That was fun. I think some type of slumped glass/lexan with an aggresive profile would look great. I'm not a fan of the glass shelf look, but props to you for doing something different.

    That looks fantastic.

If it's anything like the OEM engine cover, MUCH heavier than the factory carbon hatch.
