I’m looking for advice for my first Concourse event, Tutto Italiano, in Brookline, MA this weekend. I’m showing my 1989 328 GTB for the first time.

The car is clean, polished but not professionally, and in perfect working order. I’m wondering about all the little things that may make a big difference. For example:

Mats, should I leave the after market mats in (by Keith Collins)? There was a set of very small mats in the rear baggage compartment when I bought the car that I assumed were the stock mats, should I install them for the show?

Manuals, tools, paperwork, etc. – What and how should these items be shown? What are the judges looking for regarding these items? I have every piece of paper that came with the car including the window sticker, bill of sale, a letter from Ferrari USA warning the new owner that this is a high performance car and should be driver with care, the paper key ring from the dealer, etc.

Luggage, does anyone care that I have the luggage set that the original owner purchased with the car? Will it make a difference? If so, how should it be displayed?

I’m just trying to convey that this car is 100% original and has an impeccable documentation history. I’m very proud of this car and it took me many years to find a GTB in this condition (only has 3400 miles). If it get a “oh hum” reaction from the judges I will be very disappointed.

I'm looking forward to meeting some of the local F-Chatters at the show. Look me up, there should be too many 89 GTBs there.

When we show our car we show for fun and to meet other people. if we win something great. My last show I didn't even wash the car before the show. just took a detail spray... ( the car is kept clean though).

We show are luggage on a folding table with a black tablecloth.

The documentation can be on the seats, on a blanket, on a table, whatever makes you comfortable. I leave the documentation pouch on the dash. toolkits I leave in proper position, but they are complete.

Aftermarket floormats are tricky. you lose point(s) either way, so i would leave them in place.

My advice... show for fun. expect nothing. if you win something great.

If you want to go to the next level, ask the judges where you lost points.

remember have fun... that's what it's all about.

    Hi Mike,

Congrats on your new car! I also have a 328 GTB and have Cavallino and FCA platinums with it. I also have judged 328s in national shows so hopefully I can help.

Cleanliness takes a back seat to originality and condition so yours is probably clean enough. Take out those floor matts! The original ones (which I would bet you have) snap into place. Although there are other ways to do it, place your tools and books in the trunk as a display area. Luggage is nice but no bonus for them.

Also understand local shows may use a different yardstick than national shows ie a beauty contest rather than preservation. You want the car to be as close to when it left the factory as you can down to the cheap valve stem caps. There is no deduction for evidence of use and it looks like your car needs to be driven more! My car scores in the high 90's and has 53,000 miles.

Please let us know how you did and if you have other questions. I bet you will do fine,

    Dan

Thanks for the advice. The show was a bit of a disappointment. Judging was kind of inconsistent and 2 308s won the 328 / 348 class. Figure that one out. The judges told me I lost 1 point total. 1/2 for the valve stem covers (not black plastic ones) and 1/2 for a missing license plate holder. I had no idea it came with one. Unless that is the only thing the previous 2 owners didn't give me I don't think it came with one. I'm glad you told me about the mats because other people were losing points because ot them. Oh well, I guess it was a good first outing. It was nice talking to all of the other owners and the weather was to die for in Boston.

The local shows do tend to be less consistent. Sounds like you have a nice car. You may get a new license plate holder from FerrariUK. Yes they did come with the car but they are simple black metal. At the national shows there is no longer a deduction for absence of the holder. Go get some black plastic valve stem covers.

Someone please correct me if im wrong but you were probably somewhat dissapointed with the show because i do not believe it is an event put on by the FCA, but rather the lars anderson (sp) auto museum. At a concours put on by the FCA, and probably FCA-NER in that region you would have a somewhat more proffesional and organized judging process. That being said have fun with you car and go to the shows to meet other owners and see more F-cars. I was at tutto this afternoon, and enjoyed it very much. Perfect weather and lots of great cars.

You can get the license plate frame from dealers for $38 or so. I picked one up from Ferrari of Atlanta.

The valve stem covers are easy/cheap to get, as posted above.

Really nice 308s should certainly win that class if they're original/nice. If anything they're not as well-made, and have some obsolete parts, so kudos to those owners.

Keep at it, sounds like you have great car. I took second in an FCA event out here and enjoyed the whole day.

Beware of concours events that a particular dealer in your region might sponser....OBVIOUSLY...the award will go to the client that spends the most in that dealers service depo_On numerous occassions I have seen cars that have been so incorrect and have taken titles over those cars that have been SO correct.
    Politics are universally depressing!

No big deal on the spelling, but be sure to get the *pronunciation* correct!
