    Hey all,

As some of you may know, I've been diligently restoring a 1978 Ferrari 308 US, and I'm now at the point where I'm considering upgrades besides the ones I've already done such as the catcams cams and wossner pistons, particularly to the exhaust system.

I have a vision of giving my 308 that iconic high-pitch banshee scream reminiscent of an F1 car, similar to what you might hear from a Capristo exhaust.

However, as much as I'd love to go the Capristo route, it's unfortunately out of my budget at the moment. That said, I'm wondering if any of you seasoned enthusiasts might have some insights or advice on how I could achieve a similar sound without breaking the bank.

Are there specific modifications or components that I could consider for my custom exhaust system that would help me achieve that signature F1-like scream? Does anyone know whats inside the back box of a capristo?

I'm open to any and all suggestions, whether it's from personal experience, recommendations from professionals, or even just theoretical ideas that could be worth exploring. Your expertise and input would be immensely appreciated as I continue to refine and perfect my 308 restoration project.

Thank you all in advance for your help and guidance!

You need 3 more valves per cylinder to get that sound and about a hundred more HP. Even an amped up Michelotto engine doesn't sound like a 5 valve.

Pssst, ask where you can get a new, replica muffler for a USA catalyst-equipped, 1978 GTB. Supposedly, there's a company in Italy that now makes them. I've posted the question twice in 2 days but my posts have been deleted. Like you, the Tubis and Capristos are beyond my budget. Thanks, Chaz

Oh, as for your question: Your car will never sound like a 355 but it will sound the way a carbed 308 should. And that's beautiful!

Maybe try experimenting with some different mufflers and resonators to see what vibe suits your car best.
Tweaking the exhaust pipe size and setup could also help nail that unique sound. Going for smaller-diameter pipes might give you a higher-pitched tone.
    Just some ideas.

I know I am a little different than everyone else here, but I am always looking at what can be used with a little work. I know the fabspeed and capistro are top quality. They are out of my budget too. One interesting option I found, but would need modifying is from the JDM world. The NSX has a similar layout as transverse mid-engine. There is a company that makes an awesome exhaust and It might fit the same space on our cars - I am thinking more my GT4 at least. It is by a company called Pride. It enhances the NSX to sound pretty but rich at the same time - not a fart can. No one has ever used it in our application. They're stainless version seems affordable enough, I wouldn't be scared to buy one and see if I could make it fit and work.

There are a lot of videos on the internet - They even have a Titanium version that is still half the price of a base capistro - but would be more to modify.....

or here's one from ferrparts thats will probably work with OEM fit - https://www.ebay.com/itm/126332421487?itmmeta=01HR7S06JYWK98NHBEFJ1A0VGF&hash=item1d69ffc56f:g:7qgAAOSwjQJlzUQC&itmprp=enc%3AAQAIAAAA8NT1zZLmAFvlNsPFFCXBFkRnfO2K5eH49ts%2B4053HeEyfdtroQYuqMf%2FHUdZkKohedCW0RwXDm6NEjFQvBuWrWPUeVBakKa98E6EhrjxVb5%2BS1VrhGKebpHx3%2BC1IFhWrSJEgeC61YUMV22%2Bk8lvd8rq87SmZ7UfC%2B0mUbfzYhp14L5ZjsLQ%2B1s5hiLwvCyLfRokIysGojMVz%2Bg5QKv9rM2LKAEkHhFp8jqVyV8%2F2Cg8T0LjSs%2FC9rDyUudhLudHdonEZ%2F1VkPB--M7sX59hWl7VyTomVr84OLIJ8KygyobtzoSgG09g7NyUNxTCXTBlwg%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBM4OmA-cFj

You really should check out tinyurl.com or something similar.

Talked to Nick yesterday, he's in Italy at the moment. He said there's a number of options. I rely on his knowledge with the mufflers. Reach out to Nick if anyone is looking for muffler options.

Capristo is the bees knees for sure, but there's other more wallet friendly options for stock engines.

There was someone in the past that had magnaflow or something or other that sounded really good. I loved the Stebro I put on my former '78 308 but they're out of business as far as I know. Unless you can find a used one.

308 / 328s are not suppose to sound like an F1 car. I would install a Tubi, its the best aftermarket system for a 3x8, period. Ive had mine for well over 20 years and 80,000 miles.

The sound is period correct and the build quality is second to none. The sound is linear to how hard you press the gas pedal. At low revs its nice, at higher revs the sound builds to a very cool and period correct volume.

The one from Ferrparts looks just like the PD Gough exhaust.
it looks like the Superformance is very similar. I currrebtly have a Borla but am looking to replace it with a Nouvalari, PD Gough, or Superformance (all looks similar for similar money) I’d like to know which one fits the best.

Another option if they're still in business is an X-ost. I've had two, both were put on by prior owners, one on a 308 the other on an 89 Testarossa. I've had both off and on, the fit nice, tips lined up where they should and they sounded good.

In my opinion, the best sound that a carb 308 makes is the sound of the induction noise coming through the carbs. I don’t want an exhaust that will overpower that. I have an ANSA on my 308 that allows you to hear both the exhaust and carbs.
