    OK guys, here's my quandary......

I have a 2015 650S spider which I absolutely love. I plan on soon repositioning my modest little toy portfolio and adding a 2nd car to my 650S. I keep fixating on two distinctly different choices: a 570S or an F12. I know they are radically different cars, and both appeal to me for different reasons. In a nutshell, my thoughts are below:

    570S PROS:

    - Fun to drive
    - Great styling
    - I love the whiz bang dash and interior ergonomics seem to be a little better (more spacious) than on my 650S
    - $100K cheaper than an F12

    570S CONS:

    - Possibly too similar to my 650S? Dare I say it, fleet commonality!

    F12 PROS:

    - Nasty fast - and I like nasty fast!
    - A true GT, much different than my 650S. I will be selling my 550M to acquire my next toy, so F12 replaces my front engined 12 cyl GT.
    - Very dynamic. Nasty when I want it to be, grocery getter or date night car when I need it to be.
    - Great build quality and finish

    F12 CONS:

    - More expensive
    - Probably not as fun to drive as a 570S
    - I'm worried I might soon find it to be boring. Keep in mind, I had a 599GTB, which I found to be rather boring after just a few short months.

For ****s & giggles, I am going to post this here and on the McLaren Life 650S and 570S forums. I realize that of course I need to ultimately make this choice and decide for myself. However, I would welcome informed input from those who have owned any of these cars and are qualified to offer objective thoughts. Best regards to all.

First, you are correct. These cars cannot be more different in absolutely every way except they're both high end 2 seater sports/race cars.

I've owned 12C before and think it's not dissimilar to the 650S. It was a great car but to me lacked a bit of a personality and a bit of craziness that one would want to find in an ultra high end sports car.

I now have an F12 and it is truly INMO the best overall high end race car I've ever owned and I've had Lambos before and after my 12C.

I believe that at the price that F12s have fallen it is an unbelievable deal and it is so much more of a car than 570S, which is no slouch in its own right.

For starters, I would not compare the 2....re getting bored : Every time I get into my F12, I feel as if it's my first time and genuinely smile as she "barks" when I fire her up....Don't believe anything further can be said 😊

Drive both, see what you like.

That being said, here's my take on it.

I like the idea of getting two different cars. Sure, the 570S is not a 650S, but even though I haven't driven the 570S yet, I'm sure you can tell the breeding. If it was me, it's easy. You got a greqt mid engine McLaren, now get one of the purest Ferrari experiences there is. Get a front engine V12 Ferrari berlinetta. You get the best of both worlds imo. If you're even considering adding another mid engine V8 car to your portfolio and you're looking into Ferrari ownership, why not include the 488? That way the cars are still quite different.

My point is that, you don't want to get two cars that are too much alike, but one being slightly better than the other. That way you may expand your portfolio, but what does that matter if one of the cars is not really used? For me, a good garage is always about differentiating experiences.

Last thing to add. We used to have a 599, and it never really got me going. While I'm not currently an F12 owner, every time I'm in an F12, it's a blast - can't compare it to a 599. I can't see the F12 being any more boring than a 675LT or 650S, far from it. It's a hooligan and it's bloody fast and lively.

Agree 100% with this. In concept the 570 is too close to the 650, the engines are fairly common. The V12 in the F12 is mighty and will provide a very different experience to the 650S.

F12 is fast enough that you won't get bored. The sound alone will keep it interesting for quiet some time. The 570s is so close to the 650s that you will most likely regret not getting the polar opposite.

Honestly , if you have such a dilemma, just go for 570S. Leave the ferrari for someone else :)

If you're a car guy, you go for variety.

If you are a McLaren guy, stock up!

Drive the F12, think about it. If you think it's maybe boring by all means, leave it there.

The Ferrari nut swingers will skip the logic and go straight to telling you to leave the f12 for someone else that will appreciate it.

My opinion is to sell the 650 then buy a f12 and a 570s. You get the newer McLaren tech. You won't miss the fancy suspension in the 650 unless you're after absolute lap times

In the f12 you'll get a look that may be starting to date however it provides acceleration that may barely beat out the 570s however it'll do so while putting a smile on your face right through your ears.

I'll have a 570s and two 675s soon between a coupe and LT. I cannot say you should look out for redundancy from my experiences however if you're going to have two cars in the garage why not spread their qualities and give yourself a nice choice based on your mood at the time.

No matter what people say here, Ferrari is not the end all. Anyone that says so is being ignorant. If you're on the McLaren forum and they tell you to forget Ferrari you should take their input at face value as well.

All good input - many thanks.

650S isn't going anywhere. I absolutely love the retractable hardtop in conjunction with the CF tub.

    I have had 2 550M's, a 575M and a 599GTB (and a 365GTC/4 to go old school), so I do love my front-engined Ferrari V12's!

I am leaning towards the F12 simply because it is more different from the 650S than the 570S is and I really do like the design and build quality of the F12. I drove one recently and found it to be a marked improvement over the 599, so I'd say that if I do get bored, the problem is definitely me and not the car!

The only wild card strategy would be to sell the 650S and the 550 and get a 675LT spider, but for that kind of money I think I'd prefer to have 2 toys - a GT and a sports car.

Damn, did I just answer my own question?!?!??!

Personally, I prefer the way Ferrari do V8s, though I haven't driven a 675 yet and fully respect rmitchell's view. Ferrari are not invincible - no-one is. I owned a 12C from new and loved it.

I've driven both V8 and V12 Ferraris around Fiorano and Varano. The F12 is hard to get right, and simply not as much fun as the V8s. I also own an FF, which I have used extensively over the winter I have had it and through summer too. It is a great car for the road - mainly because of that V12. And that's my answer.

If you love Ferrari (and I do), and even if you also love other brands like Porsche and McLaren (yep, me again), the Ferrari V12 engine is one of the things that makes the world a better place for having been invented. It's a great idea to own one.

I once had a CS and a 430 Spider in my garage. Swapped the 430 for a Cali because the two mid engined Ferraris were too similar. Variety is worth a lot I reckon.

I think the 570 and F12 are ideal partners, never much liked the looks of the 650 so I'm a bit biased. Don't think the F12 is faster than a 650 though, even in a straight line the F12 cannot getaway. Does that matter? Not a jot.

From F12/FF onward ... the post warranty/DCT era ... something happened to quality more than a normal step up for next model/year.

My thought as well. If you're keeping the 650S, get a GT - whether that's an F12, Vanquish (oh man... what about a Vanquish Zagato!) or Aventador (I'd argue that's the GT of their lineup, although I think that the Huracan 580 2WD is the one to get right now if you're not getting a Diablo 6.0 or manual LP640 Roadster).

    Whatayoudoing with the cars?

    Straightblaster, backroadtwister, track junky?

I think there are few non professional drivers who can fully explore the potential of an F12 in ESC-all-off manettino mode.

Ever hit throttle hard at 200mph on a wet road and done a little taildancing? Scary fun.

Here is something I find interesting. I like our 458 Spider and in many ways it is very easy to drive fast. You're very much spot on about it being hard to get the F12 right when on the limit. But to me, that is very rewarding and it never gets old. I relish the fact that a car like the F12 can keep you on your toes and it demands that you learn. I believe this part of the philosophy that apparently makes the TdF so appealing.

Just my way of looking at it:)

And yes, I'm 100% with those who say Ferrari is not the end-all, be-all of cars. However, they have a certain feel that I find very intoxicating and it is a very emotional driving experience. Like with the similarities of the McLaren cars, you can also feel the breeding lines in every Ferrari - all across the board.

The nastiness and complexities of driving the F12 near it's extremes are actually very appealing to me. I owned a CGT and a couple of GT2's and part of the appeal to me was that those cars were very diabolical and unforgiving. It made the driving experience all the more memorable!

    Rob,

Given that you posted this to the F12 forum, I think you're just trying to wind us all up! If you find (or anyone else finds) an F12 boring, then it must be defective!

The only McLaren i've been in sounded like Grandma's sewing machine. Given than I can routinely only use about 5/10ths of my F12, the sound is part of the experience. Faster the McLaren might be, but so what?

You've obviously proven your Ferrari credentials so get an F12! You can always sell it if it bores you, and I doubt you'll have a problem finding a McLaren to purchase. They seem to come out with a new one every month..

    Best, Paul
