This morning while in class it took every ounce of my personal self-control not to scold one of my classmates for their total lack of respect for our instructor. This person will NOT put down their cellphone so they do not nor have they ever participated in classroom discussion which is a percentage of our overall grade. The instructor is not only a Academician but a good person and it kills me to witness the lack of respect he receives from not only this student but from all of the twenty something "know it all's".

"If you want to be respected by others the great thing is to respect yourself. Only by that, only by self-respect will you compel others to respect you." ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky

I guess the question I am asking is what ever happened to respecting others who are trying to help you help yourself and help you improve your life?

Just think of that person as someone who will be easy to beat. I loved it when my classmates were browsing Facebook.

    Tillman's approach is healthier.

The less earnest competition you have in what is not a team sport, the better for your own class ranking. The better your ranking, the better your opportunities for interviews. Interviews will provide you opportunity to share your concern about those twenty-somethings, thereby increasing chance of hire.

With your increased chance of hire, the more opportunity for them to be on Facebook, wondering what the hell happened.

In the meantime, let this fuel not anger, but desire.

    Remember this:

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

When I was in college, and granted, it was a long time ago, there were always those in the class who didn't, or couldn't, pay attention.

It wasn't my job, as a student, to 'help' the teacher control her or her classroom. My job was to learn, as best I could, pass the tests, do the homework, and move on with my life.

I'd suggest you do your job, and not worry about the others in the class, and whether or not they are giving the instructor the level of respect you think they should.

Nothing is more despicable than respect based on fear. Albert Camus
