Hi all. I have recently noted that my original equipment muffler/back box is full of holes and replaced it with the most excellent Superformance stainless steel exhaust. My question is: what to do with the original muffler? The main box has a split or two in it, there are holes around the pipes leading to the exhaust tips . . .

Some people tell me that I should keep the original box. I can't believe that it is worth anything and in the interest of storage space I would actually just toss it in the bin. Others say thatI should keep it because, you know, original.

What should I do with this rusty lump of metal? IMWTK

    Thanks

My guess it would depend on which model or year vehicle you’re referring to.
If the car in question is a 250 GT? or something like that, saving its OEM exhaust might be a good idea, but if it’s from, let’s say a 360, maybe not so much.

Thanks, guys. It's off a 1979 308 GT4. I agree on the 'market research' ebay approach, but that presumes that selling it is the right thing to do, which is what I hear you saying. I can't see hanging on to it. Thanks.

hang it on the wall in your garage, use it for a giant paperweight, whatever. But given that it's ratty, and the 308GT4, despite my personal love for them, is not really a car that folks restore to original to make a buck, it's likely worthless. As you replaced it with the stainless one from SP, I'd guess it's pretty bad, and even just pin holes would make it basically junk.

Although, as others have said, sometimes you can't know the value for sure, in this instance, wrapping it up for proper shipping would probably be more trouble and cost more, than the dang thing is worth.

And finally, are you sure it's the O.E.?? pretty good chance a 42 year old car has had at least one prior muffler replacement.

My opinion - toss it. The original GT4 muffler was big, heavy, ugly..... and doesn't have any "collector" value.
I, too, like the GT4. Was my first Ferrari many years ago and made a lot of great memories.

If it isn’t serviceable or repairable or if it has no collector value, just throw it out. Mufflers are consumable, like tires.

Cleaning it up back to it's "shine",
and placing it as a piece of art with a glass display case for example in your house/ Man Cave /garage seems a better idea than tossing it away IMO.

Toss it. I used to save exhausts until I had about 20 430 360 550 etc... Exhaust.

I think I got 50 bucks for one most recently. Just toss them. Lol.
