Lately I have been having these thought of selling the Countach. These thoughts are not born from disappointment. Not from needing anything. Frustration.Lack of enjoyment. I know I will be full of regret if we part ways. Do other Countach owners have these similar thoughts?
My suggestion is to tuck the car away, ignore it, don't even look at it. Later in the year, go back to it and see if you feel the same way.
It really depends on the reason….. if you cannot comfortably drive it any longer, sell. If you are concerned about driving around a now expensive car and that makes you uncomfortable, sell. If you want to upgrade to another special car, sell. If the running costs no longer fit in your budget, sell. If you no longer want to be in the car hobby, sell. Otherwise, I personally would keep it.
100%. dont sell it. you will want it back and kick urself in the ass as soon as you see a nice picture of someone elses.
If you don't love it send it to someone who does. We don't really own these things. We hold them and take care of them for the next person to take possession.
I’m pondering selling one or both of my cars either to upgrade to a newer (but less special) car or divest completely as I look towards retirement.
Always sell without regret if you have more than one solid reason for doing so, especially when the sale comes with thousands or hundreds of thousands of reasons ($ upside). Whilst I have always applauded those who prefer to covet and keep the same thing/s forever, there are also those who realize that life is short and they may wish to try as many different things as possible within that limited timeframe. There's no right way, only your way.
A reason to keep is the state of the current (and especially future) of exotic supercars. I’m not going to be driving around in a toaster oven with wheels. I used to refer to these as vacuum cleaners…..until I realized our Dyson sounds WAY better than crappy electric cars. Lamborghini has now sold their soul to the electric kool aid nut jobs, with Ferrari and now McLaren to follow.
I go through the same thought process as you. I have under 5000km on mine and I feel bad putting miles on it. I did have a second Countach that I could drive but sold it before the boom. I have two kids now and don’t have the time to drive all the cars. My fear is I sell it and want another one again. I keep coming back to the fact that I don’t need the money so don’t sell it. It’s pure art sitting in the corner of my garage!
I've only really regretted selling a couple cars. In the US we pay a capital gain on collector cars. Normally, years ago, about any car would just trade sideways. You could sell & maybe pay a little more in a few years for a similar car. It wasn't a concern. Capital gains plus appreciation creates a bigger spread on the cars I sold. While I could still buy one back, I'm not interested in paying 200k plus for a 930 that I paid 30k for. Different times & inflation distort it, but the thought of looking for the next adventure wins over a sequel once the cost of admission changes drastically. So what do you do? First you drive the car ever so often. It's good for the car, but it will remind you of the excitement (or not) that ownership has brought. I like what Joe said, you need more than one solid reason to sell. Winter seems to bring on the thoughts of selling things. Enjoy a little Spring before choosing a direction.
Yeah, I drove the countach a couple of days ago It always feels good to drive it around the neighborhood and hear positive comments.
