This is the first time I have sold a used car where I haven't delivered it to the person's house and driven home with my plates in another car. The guy is coming from PA to buy my car with a check from his bank. If we meet midway what does he do for plates to get home??? He is giving his insurance company the vin so it will be insured....... I feel like I should know the answer here but I have no idea.....

I would make sure the car is registered in the new buyers name and you have the plates. After it is transfered and he paid you shouldn't have to worry...it will be the new buyer's problem.

This would be putting the cart before the horse: he won't be able to register the car w.out a bill of sale and title, which he won't have until he gives you the check and it clears.

You have two options as I see it:
    1. let him drive it home w.your tags w.the understanding he will FedX them back to you the following day
    2. suggest he use another of his (or friend's) tags for the careful drive home

    I have done both.

DO NOT let him take your plates. If he has an accident, the car is still titled and registered to you. If he takes your car with someone elses plates, be sure to have a signed copy of the title and a statement signed by him that he is purchasing the car and will take full financial responsibility for anything bad that happens. You don't know this person. Just because he has payment, doesn't mean they are trustworthy. Also, call his bank to verify the cashiers check is good.

Also, why are you meeting midway? If he drives it home, the miles are the same. Does he just not want you to know where he lives?

+1...Certified Bank funds that can be verified!!!...Do you guys recall the kid who scammed a dealer in New Jersey for not one but TWO NEW BMW's...with phoney wire transfers...LOL...the only reason they caught him was that he tried to sell the cars to a Used Car Lot for cheap...guy got suspicious and they nabbed him...LOL...Sorry for the thread highjack....but let him meet you on your terms...he should have no issues if he is legit.

Arrange to meet at his bank. Have him call ahead to the branch to inform them that you will be cashing the check. On the transaction date, follow the buyer to his bank and have the check cashed on the spot. Buy a fresh bank check with the cash. Finish the transaction (take your plates home with you).

Have him contact his local DMV office to find out what he needs to do about the plates.

How are you going to confirm his check is good?
