I need to sell my highly modified RX7 w/ an IMSA wide body kit. I just can’t seem to make myself put it on the market. When I get inside to shine things up, the mahogany Dino wheel looks so nice & the upgraded speedo stares right at me, etc. I lift the hood & the RB strut tower brace frames that Holley w/ the custom built 13B rotary w/ separate oil lines. This car looks like nothing else on the street & runs like a bat out of Hell. Every time I try to sell it, I fall in love again. How can I break up & sell?

    Hello K,

It's not you...well it is you.

Some people have absolutly no problems parting with precious things.

Others (like you...and me) allow the seperation anxiety to prevent any action.

I know you've heard it all. "It's only a car, etc." but it and the memories surrounding it mean alot to YOU.

Maybe if you know the seller and you're sure it will be properly maintained will help.

Sorry...I don't have an answer...maybe someone else on the board can help out.

    Tom

Go out and find the replacement for it!

Then, with the shiny new car sitting there, the old car will pale in comparison.

    YOU CAN DO IT!!

Just go for a newer, younger model and you're set to go. The old shoe just won't seem as glamerous anymore.

I resemble this thread. Parting with a long loved F-car is a little like losing a lover or a divorce. I restored and kept my '64 Lusso for thirty years until my friend and mechanic, Bill Pairo retired. Also getting up in years, I made the decision to sell. I did, and to a nice fellow from Sweden. After a month or so he called to say the car was burned in a shop fire. I was crushed. However, I drowned my sorrows in a 360 Modena and am recovering quite nicely. I have my memories, and damn, fellows, I have my fun. You'll get over it. Just find something more suitable to you and your time of life. Cheers!

    Karen,

Do you have a photo of it you can post. Maybe one of the Fchatters here might be interested. Unfortunately not me, as I have my Superformance Cobra up for sale.

Sold my '64 Triumph TR4 a few years ago, after I had restored it from a real basket case. It wasn't perfect but we had a lot of fun together and many fond memories.

I regret selling it, a lot. $'s not everything... :(

I have a few guitars, electric and acoustic and would never part with any of them. Offered one of my acoustics to my daughter who is learning to play (and rapidly getting better than the old man) but she likes the classical guitar she's currently using. She said I should sell it. I told her, "no way." If one of my kids don't want it then I'm keeping it in the family.

That's a tough one. Bottom line is if you don't have to sell you don't but if you need to sell then you just have to bite the bullet and move forward. Good luck with it.

I wish you luck! Those who have never driven a really well running early RX7 just won't understand. My 1980 was mostly stock, but still one of the most fun cars I've ever driven (other than the brakes). When that oil metering system is tweaked just right, the redline is pretty much superfluous :)

Take it to the local dealer for service. They'll muck it up so much you'll dump it in rage.

(That's what pried my Alfa GTV-6 away from me. I still miss that car, but the dealer utterly ruined the engine. Fiat just doesn't know how to run a dealer network in the 'States.)

But I'm not one to give advice on this topic. I kept my Celica GT4 for 15 years (which is longer than most people keep a spouse), and I've owned my Alfa Spider longer than most college kids have been alive. ;)

BTW: the local Mazda dealership wouldn't even take it for an oil change. They said they had no rotary certified technician for the RX7.

Why sell it? Looks like cheap fun & thats hard to find now.

After you personalize a car you might as well keep it.

I had a 328GTS which I loved, and had lots of great drives. But I really wanted a 355, and decided to sell.

I agreed a px with the dealer, but advertised it privately at the same time, just in case.

I was very sad when I thought about selling it (but of course the knowledge that a 355 was arriving soon softened the blow!) but when the guy who bought it came around to see it, and I saw the thrilled look on his face as he drove off down the road I knew that it had gone to "a good home". So, I'd say a private sale helps.

I know it is just a car, but the fact that you've asked the question shows that like me, you think a car is somehow different.

Get on the bus Gus, make a new plan Stan, Dont need to feel sad Brad just set your self free..

dm-n stuff has the right formula.

Buy what you want and if its good, then after a while the passion will die for the old baby and you will be able to sell it.

This works especially well with Women. You want to leave but you just can't because of thoughts of making a mistake, not being able to replace her and regretting it ?

I did. I bought a Ferrari to add to my stable of sportscars. Just sold one, now I’m down to 4 2 seaters. The one I’m selling is dear to me in that I’ve had 2 SP engines custom built for it & have all the bells & whistles. I’ve done lots of the work myself & know every part blindfolded. Have had jewelry made in gold. It’s like a child to me. You have a child?

What RX7 Do yo have? FD, FC? I used to own a 93 FD3S and that car was well, fun. After some modifications it was fast, handled, and the lines were great on the car.

In any case, no offense to any women, but to get over a loved car or woman, just find another one as a rebound, it's an easy way to forget the past and move on wih the future. Normally before i sell one car or bike, i buy a new one to replace it. I guess then the cycle never ends, but oh well.

Well, this is the point where you have to remind yourself why you thought about selling it in the first place.

Because you don't have time for it, and it will just rot sitting in the back of your car barn? Then find it a good home with someone who will keep it healthy.

Some cars get to be special to you ... often for subjective reasons. If it's really that dear to you, figure out how much (in money, space, and time) it will cost you to keep it, with enough exercise and maintenance (and insurance etc) to keep it from rotting away.

Balance your heart against the cold equations.

(This from someone willing to rent a $200/mo garage space for a 25 year old Alfa.) :D
