Michael - You better answer us quickly!! The natives are restless. 1. You just inherited some cash, and you're moving up to the best Ferrari money can buy (aka the 348ts) 2. You got into the car, and realized the suspension was more work than you wanted to deal with. 3. Your sick and tired of the clingy, fraternity-like, nit-picky, Fchat-addicted owners, and you're going back to American muscle. What'll it be? -Daniel
man, i did not expect a response! the 308 had minor damage, it would have ran and drove fine when i got it, but the radiator had a hole in it. the " frame damage " was nothing more than the little ear the radiator sits on, well ahead of the steering and suspension. the left rear tube was shimmed, it was bent some too it seems, but not enough to throw the car out of alignment spec. i have been driving the car at night , in the rain all over the place. other than 3rd gear making noises when you shift at redline, the car is fine . under 4k and it does not grind, but it should be fixed, before something breaks! i have had over 140 cars. i wanted a cheap 308 that i could chop up for parts and learn about the car and its guts, if it was not fixable. it would be a waste to chop up this car though. i learn really fast, the new aircraft technology i am trained on at work keeps me on my toes! i Really wanted a euro carb GTB, when all of this started. i can afford "X" , but i prefer to buy " Y" and stay under my means. that said, I WANT A V12! and besides I LOVE THIS PLACE you folks are like a family to me. i aint going nowhere unless ya ask me to leave! vrooom vrooom!
By stating you want a V-12, are you saying you are going to stuff a 12 popper in the back of an old 308 like the one that was in Road & Track years ago? If that's the case, it would be a COOL project. 12 cylinders, upgraded brakes, re-worked suspension..... Wow, I'm statrting to drool. John
If you think you'll have the working capitol to 'upgrade' with the money you'll receive from the sale of this car, you might want to put the crack pipe down. This is an off-color, rust-prone carb car with accident history - everyone in your target audience knows this. I know of no V-12 on the planet, save for a fire-damaged Jaguar, that you could touch for the dollars this car will bring you. My advice? The car looks great - you do good work. Drive the car, enjoy it, preserve it, drive it some more. You are probably the only person around who will care for and appreciate it for what it is. This is not a bad thing. If money is an issue, sell off the 'other' cars first....
Once you sell the little 308 why don't you buy a Ferrari? I suggest a 330GTC, Boxer, TR or 550 depending on how new you want and how much you want to spend. However, for the money you want to spend your only choice is a 400. I recommend the 400GT as it has a 5 speed and is really a wonderful car. I had one for several years with no problems.
He'll need another $50K-$75K in addition to what he gets for the 308 to get into some of the cars you've just described....except the 400i. Then he'll only need $20K-$30K to pay for grey-market parts! ;-)
hey Mjames, i find your remarks insulting. i am trying to answer this in a nice way. who the hell do you think you are making a claim to know 1) how much money i have 2) what i can afford 3) what i am in the market for. IT MATTERS NOT IF THE POOR LITTLE 308 SELLS OR NOT, I CAN AND WILL BUY WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR WHEN THE TIME COMES. I HAVE CASH, NO BANKS, NO FINANCING NO BULL****. by the way i am single, no wife , no kids, ect and i make almost / right at $70,000 a year. did i mention almost everything else i own is paid for?. I PLAY WITH CARS AS A HOBBY. I WORK ON $$$$$$$$$$$$ BUSINESS JETS. gee i can pay " x" in cash , and OH MY GOD, finance the rest for a whatever the hell i want to buy. guess what, i dont like " most" newer computer crap, emission controled cars. not trans ams, not ferraris, ect. i want, love and only buy older carb cars. gee Daytona, Boxer, 330, 400, 365, 3x8 whatevers, Mondials, ohhhhhhhhhh a Countach , or Jalpa would be a hoot too. i would never lie to anyone about work or problems with a car. why would i NOT stress the fact the 308 ran over a curb? i would not, could not misrepresent the car to a fellow enthusiast. Mjames, given all the "quiet" heavy hitters on this site, i find it hard to believe you would judge any book by its cover so fast. dont let my old 308 fool ya buddy.
i know all of these old cars of the 70's and 80's have " issues". but i dont care. i like what i like, a carb countach, a Citrus Green 1970 Z28, a black Daytona, some cars are just icons and to own them is a gift, a way to reach back to your dreams and promises you made long ago. i am glad you " get it " Chris! michael
Thought about a 355? Great value. Also the best looking Ferrari ever IMO. If you want to go down the 12 cylinder road, I'd suggest a 512TR. I have an aviation related question... What reasons would you give for why someone should purchase a Gulfstream 550 over a Boeing Business Jet? Thanks, James.
James, thanks for the kind words. the 308 does not " NOT SUIT ME" its just a car, a 26 year old car. Ferrari yes, but still just a car. its like having a date with the prom queen. once youve been there, done that , its time to move on. there are many specific cars with CERTAIN options that i will work for to own, within reason. the 308 runs , drives, ect. no more real work to do, or things to learn. now maybe its time to get a multi carb V12, or a make or model i have not had yet. sorry to be so pissy, but as much as i like cars, there are enough of them out there that i want to try all the flavors. i made the mistake of keeping a few " choice" cars or years. no more. and i do this as a hobby, with disposable income, i could care less what sells, what does not, or when. hell i could cut up the 308 and make everyone here Marrone xmas tree ornaments. my screen name was given to me before i could drive ( legally anyway). i love turning wrenches. we are not going to have the fuel and laws to allow these cars on the roads forever.i want to have mine now. when i am old i can at least smile about something, if i am around that long!!!
for enough $$$ i will work for whoever. i am a mechanic, no big deal, i know. but the G550 is a stunning aircraft. the enhanced vision system and new avionics packages that are available now are setting the standards that the whole industry is measured by. i have never seen a Boeing bjet up close and gotten my tools in it, so i cant compare it to anything i know. the stuff in the works will blow your minds. STAR TREK stuff. all i can say!!
Carreaper, have been following your comments on this forum for some time now. Good luck with your intended V-12 ownership - the early cars are, IMHO, the ultimate Ferraris. A buddy of mine down here (South Africa) has a 275 GTB/4 and a Daytona...I have had the privilege of driving both. Words cannot describe....you will not regret the decision.
Sounds like you just want more power, the 308s do have great handling though. Get a Boxer they are very rare, handmade, have the great mid engine handling and light steering from it, not to mention awesome sounds. SInce you like doing your own work which I also prefer you'll love the access to the engine and front end, its nice being able to work on these cars without worrying about dropping a wrench on a fender or scratching it, you do need to watch about banging your head on the lid though.
A Carbed Boxer! Ding ding ding ding........................... We have a winner. Tell the man what he's won, Jay.........LOL! No xmas ornament for me, reaper....make it some Jim Beam!!
Maybe you need to check the V-12 market a little more carefully.
