So I've decided to sell my 1985 308 GTS QV Euro Black/Creme. I looked at a Testarossa I'm happy with. I'm taking the 308 in next week to Continental to get some loose ends tied up on it. What do you guys think I should ask for the 308? It has 51K miles, slightly worn drivers seat, and faded text on the center control panel. It's a Euro, so its about 300 lbs lighter than U.S., about a second faster in 0-60, and has desirble cosmetic differences from the U.S. model, and passed emissions recently. Belts replaced, new clutch at about 45K miles. Supposedly there are only about 100 Euro 308s in the U.S. Some people look at Euros negatively regarding price, while others find them more desirable. What do you guys think? What is a good price to ask?

I have had this car for over 2 years, and got it in Florida with 36K miles, and drove it all over the first year, and then to just shows last year. Mostly highway miles, my round trip to and from my office is 80 miles, and I work odd hours so the car has seen some speed without traffic ). It's been a blast to drive and look at, and I'm looking forward to taking a V12 to Indy.

    Sean,

I just sold my 85 euro qv 3 months ago.
It was red / tan with 55k miles.

Sale price was 34900 if I remember correctly.

    Hope this helps.

Sean, good luck on the sale (and buy). I'd say if you can fetch 30k you should be happy.

Anxious to see the TR some day. Personally I think you do the exact right thing. If I had the garage space, I'd do the same. And I bet in ten years from now, some of us will be scratching their heads and ask themselves why they didn't jump onto the TR market while it was weak.

    Sean-

If the Testarossa isn't a 512TR or later, I'd seriously rethink your purchase.

I know the advantages of the 512TR, but the regular TR was the car I really liked as a kid. What reason would you give not to buy it? You own one too don't you Skip? What is your experience?

Sean. I found a "Testarossa Buyers Guide" here on Fchat that explains all of the Pros and Cons of each year of the Testarossa/512TR. Basically,it's all nit picky B.S. Really, they are All good cars. If someone really wants to get down and dirty, you can find something wrong with Any and Every Car ever made. I wouldn't sweat it if I were you. I too will be looking for a Testarossa as soon as I have somewhere to put it. Right now,I have a 2 car garage. We had 4 cars. I sold 2,but,put a bunch of stuff on the other side. So My Wifes lil PT is outside right now. So,we will be looking for a new House. And,the Very FIRST thing that I am going to do is build a HUGE Garage. Big enough to put a Power Lift in it,and have an upstairs for Storage. Maybe 5-6 Bays.

The only thing that I will be staying away from is the center lock caps on the wheels. So,I will be looking for an 1988.5 and newer car with the 5 lug wheels. Sure,a 1992 or newer 512 TR is perhaps better. But,also $20Grand more than a Testarossa. Other than that....Nothing to really worry about,IMO.

Is there any way that you can keep the 308 too? You do have a really nice one. And,it will be nice to have an Open Top car,as well as sharing the miles on the 2 Ferrari's. PLUS....then,you can be a "Ferrari 'Collector' "....:)

    Yes I do.

With out grtting into detail; drive both. I think you'll see what I mean.

Appearance wise, I think the 512TR is a better looking car. A couple of things are, it doesn't have the 'high hump' on the rear deck over the engine. Also, it doesn't have the wide windsails with the vents.

I feel the 512TR is a sleeker looking car.

Forza had a buyer's guide on the TR and didn't really have an issue with it either. As with every Ferrari model they improve the design with every new release, no question that a 512TR is better. But purely based on Forza's report buying a TR is not like buying the first version of the 348.

They also now have 'Clear Pieces' to replace those "Humps" on the Rear Deck....ala 360.....:)

Plus, remember that these are "Old" Cars now...(Doesn't really seem like it to me,though....) And,the Cars that are out now...any car,really...are more sophisticated. Have more Amenities. More Power for What it is. "Regular Cars" have as much or more Horsepower than a 308. Antilock Brakes. Etc...

I see,way too many times on FChat,(Not here in the Chicago Section, and not you,Skip) Where people are reaming 308's and any other "Old" Ferrari. They keep forgetting that, despite the "Timeless" Look....and the Reputation of Ferrari...that these ARE OLD CARS! You see some guy saying,"Yeah,Man. I beat a Ferrari in my Super Tuner Honda". BFD! They are comparing a New,Modified Car,to a 20 plus something year old,"Stock" Car. What kind of "Comparison" is that? Thats like Running a Race with your Dad,or Grampa....:)

And,when I went "Ferrari Shopping" for my First Car. It really didn't make a bit of difference to me whether it was a 2V car or a 4V car. Carbed Car or Fuel Injected. I knew that when I saw it,I'd know it....:) That extra 20HP doesn't make any difference to me. I just got the Car to cruise it,not race it.

Same thing when I eventually go Testarossa Shopping.

Hey,as far as I am concerned. I don't care what any other car 'has',or can do....My Car 'HAS' that Little "Prancing Horse" Badge on the Hood, and Steering Wheel....

    Their's.....Doesn't.....:)

But,sure, perhaps a TR is a bit better than a "Regular" Testarossa....But,what difference does that make to you?

Hey Skip, have you ever brought your Testarossa to one of the shows? I don't know if I've ever seen it. I know we talked about it one time when I was riding shotgun in your car. What year/color? Are you bringing it out this summer?

Yes,I'd love to see Skip's other cars. I mean, look at the beautiful condition of his "Driver" Ferrari, and the Rolls. Just think of how the others must look.

    Sean,
My suggestion would be to hold on to your 308QV and not sell it right away. Get some time behind the wheel of your TR and feel it out. You may find that if you sell the 308 you may regret doing so. The TR will increase the "fun factor" over a 308 in some ways, but be prepared, there's a price for that increase.

    Here's why:
The 12 cylinder will double your maintenance and operating costs over the 308.
-At today's gas prices expect $50+ fill up's with less than 10 MPG.
-The 12 cylinder has double of many components.
-2 oil, fuel, and air filters. 2 fuel pumps, 14 qts of engine oil. 10 qts of gearbox oil. Not sure about the TR, but my Boxer has 2 alternators, + 6 shock absorbers, and 3 cooling fans. A 30K for a TR should be $6-8K Vs a 308 at $5K.

If you enjoyed using your 308 to commute to and from work, you may find that the TR may be far to impractical to do the same.
    Dave

    Hey Dave,

I am keeping the 308, I decided to trade my Porsche 996 instead of sell the 308. I don't intend on driving either to work on a regular basis (I already did that with the 308). They're both just fun cars for me. So only driving weekends, with other Ferraris and to events, etc.
