I am infatuated with the 550 Maranello. i know Porsche engines can last 200,000 miles or more but never see high mileage Ferraris. Does the 550 engine have that kind of longevity if serviced appropriately. I also understand that front engined Ferraris are easier to service. What can one expect to spend to maintain a car like this? I would use this car as a daily driver. thanks.

    Gary,

    Great first post. Welcome.

550's are pretty friendly on maintenance compared to other exotics.

Plan on $3k - $5k per year and you'll have quite a few years where you are well below that figure.
But every once in a while, be prepared for a bigger expenditure.

The timing belt is on the front of the engine, under easy to remove covers, so changing the timing belt every 3 or so years is not a huge expense.

A lot of the "maintenance" costs we spend is on cosmetic stuff. Things like fixing the shrinkage in the dash leather, sticky switches, broken front spoilers when they hit a curb, bubbling leather on the steering wheel center or passenger airbag cover, etc.

Once a 550 is fully sorted and modified to your liking (perhaps Tubi exhaust, wheels, tires, etc.), it will provide years of reliable fun.

Not sure about reaching 200k miles in a 550, but certainly 100k is do-able.

My 993 turbo is almost paid off (6 months to go). Initially thought I'd never sell it. 35,000 miles and absolutely perfect. Silver with beige interior completely stock. I love classic sports cars but am getting bored with the Porsche. The allure of Ferrari has always been in the back of my mind. About 15 years ago I saw my first Maranello and was smitten. I recently saw pictures of the interior and engine compartment and am now blown away and won't be in peace until one is in my driveway. Kind of like the way I felt about the Porsche 993 turbo 5 years ago. Not in a rush and want to do this right. As long as these cars have some longevity and can be serviced without breaking the bank, I'm in.

    Gary,
I think that the 550 is excellent value for the money.
They made so few of these cars compared to 360's and 430's.........but I think they are not as sought after.......maybe because people have never driven them?.......I will have to be honest....I thought I was going to buy a 360 or 430 when I started looking to buy an F-car again in 2006.
I have the 550 Barchetta.....and I bought it based on looks....without even driving one first.
I found my car at Steve Harris in '09, drove it around for 1/2 a mile, had a HUGE smile and walked out a happy customer.

Test drive one for yourself, to see what I mean.

    Hey Gary,

Coming from a similar spot here...bought my 993 turbo 14 years ago...has been my daily driver and now have 287K miles on it.....artic silver/blk. Swapped out original engine a couple years ago for a turbo s engine (from a wreck w 6k miles) when the car had 245K miles and would not pass smog (check engine light/cyliinder down). That thing still puts a smile on my face though everytime I go on boost....just like the ad says...your own portable amusement park.

Always loved the maranello growing up. Don't really like the direction porsche is going. Been looking for a 575 to add to the garage...to split time with the turbo.

Drove a gated 575...coming out of the hydraulic assisted clutch (993) into the 575 was interesting...figure would need time to get my leg back into shape!

Don't think it will be as reliable...but from everything I've been reading/researching...they run better when they are driven instead of sitting (just like the turbo). Suspect it will be a bit pricier to maintain as well...but like they say...you only live once.

    Good Luck.
    Mike

I also am falling in love with the 550/575. But let me tell you from experience, you'll regret selling your 993TT. I had a 96 993TT blk/blk. It was a great car. I really miss it. It can't be replaced. It will only improve and appreciate over the years. The last air cooled turbo. I had 10 other 911s, GT3s, turbos, etc., but none like the 993TT.

I don't regret getting my 360, but the acceleration of the turbo is intoxicating. No doubt the Ferrari has soul and many intangibles. I would think the V12 of the 550 would be fantastic. They are definitely different cars.

Maybe keep the P-car and also get a 550??

    Cheers,

    Eric

That's what I did, Eric. It's not a 993TT, but rather a 951 with some Lindsey Racing modifications. I bought it new in 1987 and I'll never part with it...

I loved the 944. And the turbo was that much better. What a great balanced car. Nice handling and gorgeous design. Good choice.

That is the right answer, if financially possible. I have a 997S as daily drive with a 993rscs fo competition and a 456GT for weekend cruising. The economy of the Porche is awesome, costs next to nothing for maintenance and can absorb the miles better than the Ferrari, both economically and resale. Only problem here in Australa is the upfront cost compared to US and Europe.

I remember reading about 1 or 2 years ago about a 170K kms (so around 107K miles) 575. That car has a little bit more electronics than the 550 but is 'basically' the same. I have little doubt the car is still going strong!

Cars love to be driven, it's what they're made for...maintain it well and it'll keep on going!

I have no doubt the 550 can do 200K miles.

I have been a Porsche Driver for Many years and the 550 is a completely different drive.

For example, Porsches don't wheel spin as much when they take off, the clutches are lighter and the gearboxs have shorter throws.

The 550 on the other hand has a classic Allure of Beauty, handles beautifully over 120MPH and oozes class.

You need to drive a good eample of one and then make your mind up.
