I have always been a fan of putting a BUY it NOW which is like your asking price so people can make offers to end it early while minimizing most of the rediculous low ball offers. I had my 308 GT4 listed and with 36 hours left, someone hit the BUY it NOW. I received an email shortly after, not through EBAY, saying that the money would be sent Thursday. I searched the buyers feedback, which was 100%(he sells old RV's on EBAY). There was a number there so I called it. He was confused regarding the purchase. He said he had it on his watch list only. He went to his computer and he could not get into his own account. Someone hijacked his account and is trying to screw me, I guess.
I'm pissed because the car was being bid up, had 145 people watching it, and over 4200 views and lots of questions from prospective buyers. I am hoping EBAY will relist it for free or even continue from where it was and notify the watchers and bidders. Unfortunatley, you can't call EBAY. You have to go through preset menus to file a complaint.
I would suggest that you do not use the BUY it NOW as an option because I guess this is a new scam. Just list in your description what your BUY it NOW would be.
I will wait to see if I get my bogus check.
Anyone know hoy to track email addresses? I received an AOL email address from him.

My BIN is my opening bid. If I want $43,000 for a automobile that is where I start the bidding. I never understood the reserve concept where you list an Enzo at $50 and let people bid to an endless barage of "reserve not met" responses. My opening bid price is the minimum I will accept, anything over that is gravy. I usually do not entertain end it early e-mails, and when I have I always received 10% or more above the current price to do so.

Unfortunately this happens all too often. While a pita, eBay should refund you the listing fees and selling fees. You may have to jump through a few hoops, but give them the account it was purchased through, make sure the guy you talked to whose account was hijacked has also contacted eBay and made sure that his account is suspended, and they should be OK with that. I stopped using Buy It Now for exactly that reason. No matter what, we'd get jerks hijacking and doing it with regularity. It got to the point that I had my eBay account rep's phone number memorized so I could call immediately.

I don't get it. What's the scam? Just to screw with the seller? How do they hijack accounts?

Yup, just to screw w/the seller. You ever get those spam emails supposedly from eBay asking you to go to the linked site and enter your info? Apparently some idiots fall for it, and thus they hijack the accounts. For what purpose, I can't say, it makes no sense to me to risk getting caught just to jerk people off, but who knows...

No but someone has to report their solicitation emails - maybe nab 'em that way? Who knows, I still don't see the point. Most don't even try to get you to send them the cars, just disappear after hitting buy it now.

I've received 2 email from the scammer ofrom his personal email after he hit BUY it NOW. I gave him my contact number in both replys and he never called but gave me a contact number that went to some generic voicemail. That is when I got suspicious and went into the buyers feedback and found his business number on some of his past sales. I called him and we realized that his account had somehow been hijacked. What is interesting is that he had put my auction on his watch list.
Here is the first email I received from the hijacker
    Doug,
I'll be sending payment for my purchase Thursday for the Ferrari I've purchased from you. Please reply ASAP if that's OK with you. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
    Thom Beckley
I responded regarding contact numbers and received a second
    Doug,
Please call my cell 773-598-5834. Thanks
    Thom Beckley

He is using the name of the guy's account he hijacked. Thom is a business owner and in his EBAY disclosures he lists his name, contact and other info.

I will be curious to see if I get a bogus check and how it will proceed. I figure this is just a different version of the scam where they email you saying that they will sent your asking price plus $5000 ......

To deposit the bad check you will have to write your account number on and sign the rear. Although you will be holding the bad check, at some point you will asked to photocopy the check front and rear and your information will be exposed. I would not bother depositing said check as your bank will charge you $35.00 for it bouncing.

If he mails you the check, it would be Mail Fraud. Check with your local Postal Inspector, as this is a Federal Offence

I've had similar problems with Ebay.

I have 3 people's phone numbers there, as I've had more than one car "bought" by a hijacked account.

Don't expect them to do anything about it, but I'll be happy to give you their numbers if you PM me, then you can bug Ebay about it.

If you get an e-mail from the crook you should be able to strip off the IP header info. Law Enforcement should be able to get the name and address of the IP user from the ISP, unless the crook is smart enough to use a proxy server.

Or, if you have a lot of free time, you could file a civil action against "John Doe", and then use your new subpoena powers to subpoena the IP info from his/her ISP. Actually, AOL should be pretty easy. I think they'll cough up the info when hit with a subpoena or an inquiry from law enforcement.

I'm itching to see just one of these scam dudes get caught!

Me too, but it's harder than it seems....nobody's interested in prosecuting.

I tracked down a guy selling a Range Rover that didn't exist on Ebay...even had a guy that sent him a cashier's check for $63k that contacted me...I contacted Ebay and the FBI, and neither place cared to do jack squat about it.
