Last night, as I was playing around with my new 105mm VR lens, the dreaded "CHA" reading appeared on the top LCD display. I tried all the usual methods I had used in the past to fix it, which had always worked, but nothing happened this time. So, I spent a pretty good amount of time in Wolf Camera today talking it over with them and sitting on hold with Nikon Technical Support. ONE pin in the memory card bay looks to be a little off, and the memory card worked the other D200 they had there, so the problem must have been with my camera. Upon further inspection, it seems that my Compact Flash memory card had emitted some static electricity into the memory card bay, which totally ruined ONE of the pins, so now the camera won't accept any memory card. Now I have to send my beloved D200 in to Nikon for repairs, which won't be covered under warranty because they view it as customer damage, which will cost anywhere from $65 to $270 to repair. The worth thing about this is that I had planned to do a photo shoot fellow Fchatter Robert Biscans cars TOMORROW, which is now impossible. JUST GREAT!

    Argh...

    -John

I've spend almost a year with a lot of nervousness :(
Nikon, and the Photo Store (where i buy the camera) sad that they won't repair my camera for free (2 year long guarantee, the camera was half year old ), because the owner of the store dont want to pay the cost of repair ...

I've wrangled a lot with the owner, and finally they repaired my guaranteed camera for free. The problem was that i can't take any pictures with the camera, the reason was a simply software error. Damn i was so nervous. But that was in Hungary!
    (Sorry for my bad english)

Camera stores are a lot like that here, too. Since the memory card caused the problem, I think that the company that made the memory card should pay for the repairs, but they see it differently.

My D200 arrived at Nikon yesterday. I called them and they said that it would take anywhere from 10-14 BUSINESS days. Arg...

I got a call from Nikon a few days ago. I am spending $212.50 to get my beloved camera fixed and now they are waiting for a part to come in. Ugh...

    That truly sucks!!:(

For $200 I got my camera fully covered. Just had it sent in for cleaning, which I can do whenever I want, for free.

I pretty much have to trash it into the ground in front of them, for it not to be covered:D

Sometimes, buying from an official Nikon dealer is a good thing - no hassles about warranty work, a direct pipeline to factory repair facilities, and you have the possibility of receiving loaner equipment while your camera is out for repair.

Pushes me towards a Canon Rebel XTi even more.

Is that the only trouble youve had with it?

Why? It wasn't the camera's fault. It was the memory card that caused all this.

Hold a Rebel XTi and then hold a Nikon D70, D80, D200, etc. and you will instantly be pushed back to the Nikon side.

    To each his own.

To me, the Canon felt a bit cheap and it was REALLY small. I also LOVE Nikkor glass.

Google this problem. My Nikon gave out and it turned out to be a faulty chip that was replaced for free and out of warranty. Check into it before sending the thing off.

just reading this thread, i m looking for one, so i revised my jugement when i read in the nikon forum that the D200 gets many problems, so take care with
this material. sometimes you can have "dead pixels" visible on pictures...

Don't mean to derail the thread here but.... I have had my XTi for almost a year now and most of it's life it has bounced around in my bags as I fly around Iraq, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa. Other than occasionally getting a bit of dust inside (the ultrasonic sensor cleaning works great) it has proven extremely durable.

You're probably right. I guess I've just been spoiled by the size of my D200, which is working fine now.
