CBS mentioned during its broadcast the story of when Senna crashed at the GP while in the lead and then was so pissed, that he left the car and went straight to his apartment nearby.

While I don't dispute the story I was wondering whether anybody had some more info about it: I can't imagine a F1 driver carries his house keys with him during a race. So did Senna's house have a guard with a general purpose key or did it have a code lock or relatives/girlfriend at home (one would think they'd all be in the pitlane)?

    Just curious.

PS: I got a kick out of Kimi on the yacht after his engine blew. Classic.

Probably had friends/family already there watching the race at his place and let him in. Kimi on the yacht was classic! I'll get a screen shot up in a few days once I have the race on my computer. :D

The second great shot of him this weekend after the ice man sat in the ice mobile.

I can't wait for him to join Ferrari. He'll be right at home replacing the colorless Massa.

I actually thought Kimi would've taken the steering wheel with him from the car so that it might not be stolen (Jag diamond). It was never mentioned, but did Juan's car have the diamonds, too? For some reason I doubt he had it in his. Even if he did, it was probably zirconia, lol :D

Edit: The 1988 Monaco GP was with Senna going to his apt.

Edit #2: It was with McLaren, too, LOL!

It seems every time they do a diamond with a car, it is doomed to be wrecked or blown up. The diamond will always be lost somewhere. Marketing? Or bad omens with the Mercs?

My information isn't THAT detailled :D

I only know he locked himself in his apartment. Teammanager Jo Ramirez had a hell of a time getting a hold of him.

The images of Kimi lounging at some yaught, were priceless.

My understanding, according to Rubython's book "The Life of Senna", is that when he climbed out of the car, he walked straight back to his aprtment, that was very nearby, and it was only very late that night that Jo Ramirez, the McLaren team manager, persuaded his housekeeper to get him on the phone. One can assume that she let him in......Remember, this is Monaco we are talking about, and you should assume that the aprtments have doormen, security, and staff, etc.....also remember we are talking about Senna here.....I would think he could get in anywhere he wanted to just by showing up......he was after all in his suit, carryimg his helmet.....
I don't imagine that many high rollers keep the doors locked in Monaco....

(by the way.......great book.....get a copy, you won;t be disappointed...)

That's kinda what I figured. It just occured to me, that he sure didn't have his house keys with him. I believe F1 drivers even take their watches off for the race.

Actually I think many of them race with watches on......I think I've seen a lot of photos of Schumacher just out of the car with the Omega in the wrist...

I've seen drivers put ON a watch after they get out and go to weigh in. I never understood that one.

For one their watches are valuable, so they want that thing back and 2nd they're on a tight schedule. Finally any ounce counts when you go to weigh in.

It's all about marketing. Notice how in the press conferences the drivers are always scratching their ears, chin, cheek, etc etc etc, and it's always with the watch hand, and the watch is always visible above the race suit? ;)

The watches they're sponsored to wear are free.

Secondly, I doubt they're worried about anyone in the F1 paddock stealing them...

Excellent book - two thumbs up. Goes quite nicely with the Senna DVD. :)

I don't know the exact building, but Senna lived in a high-rise apartment in the Larvotto neighborhood of MC (by the beach, to the east of the Monte Carlo neighborhood), and they've all got doormen and security so I'd guess he had no trouble getting in!

I remember after a race in Detroit 2 of the 3 podium finishers did not show up at the post-race press conference - they wanted to get to their rooms to watch World Cup Soccer. I can't remember which 1 of the 3 showed up, I want to say Brundle, but I'm not sure..

p/s : when senna crashed at monaco, was it the one when ron asked him to slow down? or was it the one where he hit the wall when it moved about 1 cm?

Ron told him to slow down.

The wall that moved an inch or centimeter was Detroit IIRC in practice.
