On the 308's the engine and transmission are connected together and I believe they share the oil between them. My machine shop has recommended that as I am rebuilding the engine and have them both pulled, I should have a bottom plate manufactured for the engine and the oil sump tube shortened so that the engine and transmission are separated but still sitting one on the other and then for later servicing of either the engine or the transmission only the assembly needing to be worked on needs to be pulled. Has anyone heard of this and how it worked out? Why did they attach the two in the first place? My only thought is that it may be to dissipate the heat of the engine better and that by separating them I may have overheating problems. Anybody have any information on this and its success or failure? Thanks.

While I'm certainly no expert, it seems to me the way Ferrari engineered it in the
first place is the best way to go. The 'unintended consequences' of making such
a major mod could potentially result in a destroyed gearbox and / or destroyed
engine. I say leave it the way it was designed.

    Scott,

More then the connection plate will need to be reworked.

First, have the drop gears re-engineered. $ 200.00
Then have them machined. $ 2,000.00
Then have the cover cut and welded. $ 300.00
Then have the cover machined. $ 200.00

Why would you want to do that?

Engine and transmission only share their oil if the shift shaft seal between the casings is worn out :)

This is wrong..as noted it's two different oil systems entirely........

Maybe you have a Miura also?? :D :D

But the later Miuras have two oil systems also.....

Good thing you found us here on the chat!

Welcome and if you have the Owner's Books it'll clearly answer your questions..there's lots of good Fcar shops in CA, but it appears this isn't one of them!!!

There are some excellent line drawings of the engine and transmission assembly in the Workshop manual, see http://dino308gt4.com. And by all means show that to your machine shop, as you look for a new one :) As mentioned above, they only share oil if the shifter seal is gone.

I assume they have seen that the crank goes below the bottom of the engine, so a simple plate won't do the job they suggest.

Here's what everyone familiar with the 308 is thinking when you're getting those reactions:

The transaxle has the engine sump as a structural element to ensure that the engine, transmission, & bell housing are joined with the extremely precise tolerences needed to ensure proper mesh of the drop gears & rigidity for smooth power transfer.

Pulling one w/o the other doesn't work either:
There are a lot of fasteners that tie the engine & tranny together. Trying to separate the engine from the tranny inside the car would be a herculean task as you just can't get at a lot of things. Also, there is absolutely no way to drop the transmission in a 308, it has to come out the top.

Not to mention that the engine or tranny will only get pulled 1-3 times during the car's life, so doing a lot of machining wouldn't make economic sense.

I'd like to thank everybody for their input. I'm glad I found you guys here. Enough said, I see now very clearly what needs to be done and what does NOT need to be done.

    Cheers,

    Skott
