I have found and settled on a price for a pre-1981 model 400i but wanted to verify serial number if possible. If any forum members out there happen to have one or more of the Ferrari books listing serial numbers and other pertinent information, the one I am interested in is serial # 41217.
    thanks

Cavallino shows the 400i manufactured from 1979-84 with a serial number range of 27978-55523.

You should do a PPI. Just because the serial number is within the range means little. Over the years many aftermarket parts and piices could have been added, replaced and you'll find it difficult if not impossible to get it back to original (if that's the direction you want to go)

In 1988, 41217 was offered for sale by Sports 'N Imports in Miami, Florida. They listed it as being light blue metallic with blue interior. 10,000 miles.

S/N 41217 is a 1982 production 400i Automatic (most likely made in February or March)

RMDC is absolutely right. Serial number history - unless very detailed and telling - isn't the end-all-be-all... A PPI is the best way to go. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks to all who replied. The car obviously has been repainted, apparently twice. The current color is "Green" - apparently not an original Ferrari color but it appears identical to the 68 Fiat Dino Coupe I owned in the early 70's. The car has made its way cross country and was one of several Ferraris owned by a gentleman near LA. The car is being sold I believe by his brother through the cooperation of Michael R. at Ferrari Service in Costa Mesa. I have been through a telephonic walk thru with him on the car and have pictures in hand. She needs some attention but overall appears to be in reasonable shape for the age. Current mileage is recorded in the 23-24K miles region and compression is 165-175 all around. I thought that based on the center console layout, hood and trunk releases by the drivers seat, lack of rear speakers, and the original sloped dash with the circular A/C vents that it might be a 1980 or 81. Current plan is take possession of the car after the 1st of the year and have it shipped back to Florida
