How can I tell if the the engine in my 88 Mondial Cab is the original one?
heritage certificate from ferrari will tell you. Not sure if they still offer that service for free, had my 308 checked and the engine and gearbox all matched.
Classiche program is the only way to get this info. The Heritage Certificate was only for pre Fuel Injected models. I got this reply from Ferrari when I sent them an inquiry on my 308. Contact Lucia Petrone, she will send the info and forms. There is a fee with this service. Dear Mr Hansen, thank you for contacting us. Regarding your kind inquiry into the history of your Ferrari 308 GTS, we kindly invite you to contact the Ferrari Classiche representative at Ferrari North America in the person of Lucy Petrone who can be reached on the following email address: [email protected]. Ferrari Classiche is our department dedicated to the defence of the marque's historical patrimony and created to promote and protect the authenticity of Ferrari vehicles and where we verify the conformity of the vehicles and issue exclusive certifications for original cars. Should you need any further information and assistance please do not hesitate to contact us. Our best regards, Ferrari Customer Care
The Heritage Certificate program was for 79 and earlier cars. Only carb models. Classiche is the new program and for all Ferrari's. This is what information is required and the cost. This is what Ferrari sent me when I asked for info on my 308. The Ferrari Classiche Department offers only 2 options for obtaining historical information on vintage cars. I have available the service outlined below: Information on the vehicle Requests: 1.Year of production and eventual declaration 2.Finish of the vehicle (colors, interiors, accessories) 3.Verification of the mechanical group originality The applicant must transmit the request via e-mail or fax and must include the following documentation: 1 . a copy of the registration document of the vehicle; 2 . photos of the vehicle 3 . all the data necessary for Ferrari S.p.A. to issue the invoice (personal details or company details) For those requests related to point 1 and 2, Ferrari Classiche will release information only after receiving the documentation requested. For those requests related to point 3, the applicant must provide the documentation mentioned above, along with the identifying numbers (engine, gear, differential) of the vehicle. Ferrari Classiche will then provide a written confirmation if these numbers correspond with the technical data sheet of the vehicle. The only choice I have for you to enter the car into the Ferrari Classiche Certification Program. This will document the originality of the entire car. Use the e mail link in my previous post to contact Lucy Petrone at Ferrari North America. She can help you with the information on your QV.
Thanks for the information and the protocol/cost. Too bad they didn't use sopme sort of more obvious "numbers matching" codes when they did the original build, or include such data with the manual when the car was originally purchased... My concern is that I have a swiss car, but a couple of things do not quite seem to be exactly as expected for a swiss car (e.g. the location of the idle control compared with the swiss manual, some other emmissions things). The swiss car has very special, and special order fuel injectors, that I was thinking of renewing, and in the back of my mind I sometimes wonder if maybe I have a US spec engine swap and will end up with the wrong parts. Or maybe the details of a late 88 car are a bit different as an end of run model, and the owners manual is not always up to date. (I do have for sure the original owners manual, and my background check on the car originally did not surface an engine swap, but stranger things have happened...).
