As I'm looking for a 400 and trying to find all the differences, I found this car. What is up with that diving board of a rear bumper? It's a 1979, so a series I. Is that some sort of a federalized bumper? It looks horrible IMO.

There are a lot of threads that deal with the series 1 and 2 differences. Do some searches.

Yes that is a bumper modified for the federalization process and yes it looks horrible. Looks like the exhaust outlets were extended too...though hard to tell. Easily replaced with a proper bumper.

'79 Series I - the best one! The first fuel injected cars were then. Is it carby/injected, man/auto?

Old school switch gear, and simple(r) rear suspension - mine's been replaced anyway.

What are the negatives of an early car? Is the fuel injection system more primitive on a 1979 model vs an 1985?

I found the differences posted by user dstacy:

    1) S1 has cable controls where S2 has solonoid controls on fuel door, trunk, and hood
    2) S1 has wood console where S2 has leather covered.
    3) S1 vs S2 painted hood loovers vs. silver
    4) S1 vs S2 black tail vs body color
    5) S1 has 15" wheels, S2 has TRX
    6) S1 has standard koni rear shocks, S2 has load leveler system
    7) S1 has ceramic fuses, S2 has push in 2 post type
    8) S1 has standard fuse box, S2 has printed circuit board

    3) S1= silver vs S2= painted loovers!!! Isn't it??

    9) S1 no rear fog lights vs S2 rear fog lights in bumpers

Well, looks like a long list pro-S1!! :)

Does the series one have a single AC and the Series 2 dual AC? I assume they are talking about dual evaporators and blowers?

Speaking of AC, how well does it work? Being in Miami, I need very good AC.

Dual AC was an option, and yes, dual evap/blowers. The rear one sits up under the parcel shelf, and makes a lot of difference. The AC overall works very well.

Ok, so dual AC was an option on series I and series II?

Also, early series II cars got the black rear painted area, mostly 83 models is where that transition lies. So that is not a S1 vs S2 thing.

Dual AC was an option. My series II does not have it for example.

Apparently some late Series I cars got TRX wheels.

The entire dash is different between the S1 and S2, it's not just the wood vs leather center console. Also the front grille--full nose opening width covering the driving lights on the S1. S2 the grille was only long enough to not cover the driving lights at the edges.

Fuel injection was the same. Some (most?) 79s were carbed cars....had to be a late 79 car to have injection to my knowledge.

81-82 cars got Nardi steering wheels (as Ferraris across the board did). Before and after got Momos, I think pre-79 had silver spokes. After the Nardi-era the spokes were black before getting a leather cover for the 412s.

Look at pics of S1 vs S2 dashes. If choosing an injected car, this is going to be your most obvious difference. Choose which you like best. The biggest difference by far on these cars is carbs vs injection, and manual vs automatic--carb manual being the one most people freak over. That's the rarest too.

My 1979 series 1 400i auto has the Momo wheel with silver spokes, plus the dual air-con (which is more than adequate to cope with the British "summer" weather!). As far as I can see on period UK brochures, the only two option extras available at that time were a hi-fi and the extra (dual) air-con - as my car had both fitted from new I call it a full-spec 400i.

My late '79 Series I (delivered xmas eve) has the Momo wheel, TRX tyres, auto, dual AC, and a few "change over" quirks - TRX wheels, but a 15" spare; CIS but a the owner's manual is for a carby car (29199)

Yes, on the series 2 for sure but also the series 1 I believe and made standard on the 412.

Just curious, are you sure some previous owner didn't buy a set of TRX tires for your car? I didn't think Michelin made the TRX in our size until late 1981 or early 1982.

That would be unlikely. I know the guy who imported it from the factory, and that's how it came. If you get a flat rear tyre, you're supposed to swap the front to the rear and put the spare on the front so you don't bugger the diff

I had the same thought as Dave. TRX in 79 is early--I see TRX setups starting to appear in 1981 through 1985 until the went to the ugly ABS wheel for the 412. :)
