    Is it my imagination, or does the Fchat server go into never-never land with random regularity these days? It seems like it just died for a few minutes.

    Yeah, for me it will do the same thing. Work perfectly fine for an hour then just stop for a minute or two.

    It has been doing this for months and it makes me crazy. There are delays sometimes between pages that last up to 30 seconds.

    I know I know. Geez, now you want me to ruin the secret! :)

    The good news to everyone is I'm quitting! I'm quitting trying to be a server admin when I'm not. It was slow last Fall, so we reloaded the OS, but then it was slow because we lost the years of tuning, and then I got it faster a couple months ago, which it is still faster, but there are those intermediate hiccups.

    First of all, I'm switching hosts, upgrading servers, and going to multiple boxes from the current single big box setup. This will take a couple months to do. I've also hired a server admin that is very experienced with the software I use, including vBulletin, and the new host.

    So be patient for the complete migration to take place, it isn't easy.

    In the meantime as a final test for the admin I'm going to have him tune up the current server, so hopefully users will see some improvement before the big migration.

    The fact is we've just outgrown this server, 1,200 new users a month. Bandaids aren't the answer any more, we're starting from scratch. New solution will be scalable too.

    Stop posting so many bikini pics! :D

    Nothing will change at all, except that everything will be faster. Actually, when we get speed back, we can turn on some additional functionality that we have turned off now just because of performance.

    That should never happen and you loose it. Either back page it or I always have the text copied anyway to an email for spell check. I've never lost a post.
