I just purchased an 85 308qv. Real nice w/no paintwork 19k miles. It needs a full service. What questions should I ask my ferrari mechanic to make sure I am not getting clipped? He has estimated 5-6k and already gave me a list of extensive procedures. Thanks for your help!! Eddie

5-6k sounds a bit high if you ask me. Are you having the service performed at a dealer or independant? I believe most places charge roughly 24 hours of labor plus parts for a major. This should include: timing belts, belt tensioners, valve cover gask, plugs, ign rotors, dist gask, valve adjust (should it need any), cam seals, new brake fluid, oil change, clutch adjust, and a comprehensive checking and tuning of injection system. I may have missed something, but you get the idea. Most well versed Ferrari mechanics can knock this task out in less than 24 hours labor. Parts cost is going to be in the $500ish range depending on where the parts come from. Even at $100 an hour, $5-6k is high. There are several places advertising majors for $3k. I do now know your dempographic, but if you need shop recommendations, this is the forum to ask.

    good luck!

Assuming you are going to be "getting clipped" is not exactly the best way to start a relationship is it ?

Why not turn the question around as suggested above and give a hint of where you are so that others can recommend somewhere local where they have had long-term good service ?

I agree with Jimmie. I am tired of consumers assuming the repair shop is going to rip them off. I currently have two Mondials in my shop for majors. Both cars should cost about 3K for the service. The 81 Mondial is my personal car, and after inspection it we found exhaust valves leaking. So the cost is now going to be about triple. The 87 Mondial came in and the first thing we noticed is the parking brake is stuck on. The cost just went up. The bottom line here is COMMUNICATION. I usually quote a job from a flat rate schedule but tell the customer that there might be some unseen complications and the cost me increase. I never put anything on a bill that the customer is not aware of. No suprises. Talk to your mechanic and have him itemize everything on a written estimate. He should have no problem spending any length of time in great detail about what he is going to do to your car to earn your business and trust. If he does't, then he's not your man. I have spent many hours with customers discussing thier vehicles and educating them on repairs made or repairs that may need to be done. The other thing I might ad as I am here ranting like some crazed shop owner. It is OK for the shop to make money! I have a small 4 bay shop with 5 employees and I have to clear 20K a month just to pay the bills. So, go down to your shop of choice, hang out for awhile and talk about that list of extensive proceedures so you know what he is doing and you feel comfortable about what you are paying for. If you have any questions feel free to call me next week at the shop. 360-866-8615.

Age, lack of driving and perhaps some deferred maintenance can all add up on a basic "major service". Some possible "incidentals" that could crop up: Water pump rebuild, replace all water hoses, replace fuel hoses, suspension bushings, etc. Remember, this is a 21 yo car...whether driven or not...rubber hoses and seals age and rot. It is very possible your mechanic is being cautious to cover some of these very likely to need items. I would be especially certain to have the fuel filler neck hose replaced during this service...this is the hose from the fuel filler neck to the left side gas tank...they get rotted and crack, and while filling with fuel, could leak fuel on the exhaust manifold, and "blamo"...instant Car-B-que.

I didn't mean to offend any service providers out there who are hard working and honest. I understood fully the expense that goes along with ferrari ownership before making the purchase. I live in Nashville. There appears to only be one shop that works on ferrari. He claims to be factory trained. He appears to be semi retired and his son is taking over the reigns. Before I purchased the car I called and spoke to the son. He quoted me in the neighborhood of $3500 for a 30k service. Now that I own the car he has quoted $5-6k. This is before even seeing the car. At this point I am somewhat apprehensive about the whole procedure. I just want to keep everybody honest. Thanks again!!!

Ferrari of Atlanta is not too far from you. Several of my friends use them for service and have been very pleased. Don't know about cost, though. You might also try posting your question in the regional area. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=20
Seems like I remember that someone in the Birmingham area has a good rep for service.
